Mens Track Finishes Strong at Va Tech Invitational
January 16, 2016 | Men's Track and Field
Blacksburg, Va. – The Army West Point men's track and field team came away from the second and final day of the Virginia Tech Invitational with a win coming from Brown Bailey in the 5000-meter run on Saturday at Rector Field House.
"I thought we competed well today against some quality opponents," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "I was really impressed with some of our throws this weekend. Dawson Hillis stepped up and had a significant improvement, which is exactly why we came down here."
Brown completed the race in 15:07.09. The Black Knights dominated the event, taking home the top-three spots. Senior Drew Beck placed second with a time of 15:09.42 and junior Jacob Fong was third after crossing the finish line at 15:14.86.
Hillis recorded a second-place finish in the shot put. His mark of 15.85 meters was .02 meters short of the winner, Joel Hoisington of VMI. Garrett Kohnke placed eighth in the event with a shot of 14.85 meters.
Jeff Giannettino and Alex Olson both tied for third place in the high jump, clearing the bar at 2.00 meters.
In the 400-meter dash, Jose Santana placed fourth after sprinting the event in 49.27 seconds. Staying on the track, Trevor Touchton and Ben Boswell both cracked the top-10 in the 800-meter run. Touchton placed fourth with a time of 1:53.53 while Boswell was seventh after finishing the race in 1:56.07.
Army returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 23, as the team travels up to Boston, Mass., for the Joe Donahue Games.
