Men’s Track Finishes Ninth at Donahue Games
January 22, 2016 | Men's Track and Field
BOSTON, Mass. – The Army West Point men's track and field team placed ninth out of 13 teams at the Joe Donahue Games, hosted by Northeastern, on Friday.
"We had a pretty good meet tonight," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "We put some of our athletes in different events to see how they would respond, and the results were pretty good. We were also using this meet to evaluate our potential roster for the Navy dual and the Patriot League Championships. Mitch Dutton ran an outstanding 800. He hasn't competed in that event indoor since 2013 so it was great to see him put forth that type of performance."
The Black Knights were led by their field events. Pole vaulter Lee Bares finished second in the event after clearing the 5.10-meter bar. Tyler Davis took home third in the long jump with a distance of 6.92 meters. Thrower Dawson Hillis collected two top-10 performances in the shot put and weight throw. His shot of 15.63 meters earned him a fourth-place finish while his toss of the 35-pound weight traveled 15.72 meters, good enough for a 10th-place finish. Garrett Kohnke also finished ninth in the shot put with a distance of 15.05 meters while Tanner Andrews placed 10th in the triple jump with a leap of 13.12 meters.
On the track, Kevin Dyer dominated for Army, bringing home two top-10 finishes. He qualified for the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.02 before running a 7.07 in the finals for a seventh-place finish. Dyer also competed in the 200 meter dash, finishing sixth with a time of 22.61. Senior captain Taylor Andrews qualified for the 60 meter hurdle finals after a preliminary time of 8.45. He placed fourth with a time of 8.27. In the 800 meter run, Mitch Dutton earned a fourth-place finish after a 1:54.23 performance.
Army will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 30, as it travels back to State College, Pa., for the Penn State National Invitational.
