Men’s Track Prepares for Virginia Tech Invitational
January 14, 2016 | Men's Track and Field
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's track and field team will compete in its first two-day event of the 2015-16 campaign at the Virginia Tech Invitational from Rector Field House on Friday and Saturday.
"We scheduled this meet because it was a two day meet and gave us an opportunity to get more work in," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "Our first meet was our rust-buster, and now we'll have an opportunity to simulate a conference championship where you might need to run on back-to-back days."
The field of 16 is highlighted by three ranked teams. Host Virginia Tech currently sits at No. 4 in the latest USTFCCCA poll while Tennessee is 15th and South Carolina is 19th.
The Black Knights competed at the Penn State Relays on Saturday with a standout performance from the Patriot League's Track Athlete of the Week, Lee Bares. Bares won the pole vault with a height of 5.15 meters, eclipsing his old personal-best of 5.11 meters set earlier this season at the Crowell Open. The Lakeville, Minn., product also broke the Penn State Relays previous record of 4.99 meters, set back in 2006. Bares continues to edge closer to the program's all-time record of 5.24 meters held by Darrin Hinman who set the mark back in 1997.
The Virginia Tech Invitational is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. on Friday.
