Volleyball Prepares for Black Knights Invitational

WEST POINT, N.Y. – For the fifth straight year, the Army West Point volleyball team will host the Black Knight Invitational. Army will face Iona, William & Mary and Cornell Sept. 5-6 at Christl Arena.
"The team is very excited to play at Christl for our tournament," said head coach Alma Kovaci. "The competition this weekend is going to be very tough. The teams are very different, but we are focusing on what we can do on our side. Every time we step on the court we want to get better, that is our goal. We are continuing to improve our serve and pass game, and to be strong in every position."
The Black Knights enter the weekend 1-2 on the season after falling to Big 12 powerhouse Kansas, 3-1, and to tournament host Arkansas, 3-1, of the Southeastern Conference.
Army defeated McNeese State 3-1 after firstie co-captain Vanessa Edwards had her first double-double performance of the season to aid yearlings Carolyn Bockrath and Vanessa Wesley in career-high games. Bockrath, who was named the AAA Athlete of the Week, totaled 28 kills with only one error for a hitting percentage of .659. Wesley tallied 12 kills, also with only one error, for a .440 average.
The Black Knights have their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 4 against Iona at 11 a.m. with a night-cap against William & Mary at 7 p.m. On Sunday, the Cadets will face Cornell at 1 p.m. to wrap-up the weekend.
The Gaels enter the tournament with a 2-2 mark after defeating Holy Cross (3-2) and Quinnipiac (3-0). Army leads the series 13-4 over Iona, and the two teams have met 17 times since 1982. The Gaels were victorious (3-1) in the team's last meeting which was at the 2010 Black Knight Invitational.
William & Mary is 2-1 on the season with a 3-0 win over La Salle and a 3-1 victory over Norfolk. This will be the first meeting between the Black Knights and the Tribe.
This weekend will mark the opening of the Big Red's 2015 season. Cornell leads the all-time series over Army, 6-1. The two teams first met in 1978 during Army's inaugural season where the Big Red won 2-0.
