Volleyball Downs Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Army West Point volleyball team remained perfect in conference play with a 3-1 victory over Colgate Friday night in Hamilton, N.Y.
The Black Knights improved to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in conference play with tonight's win.
"I am so proud of the team for fighting until the very end to get the 'W'," said head coach Alma Kovaci. "We were injured and under the weather, but the team stayed focused on the mission and showed true grit. I thought the coaching staff did a great job communicating with the team and specific players in critical moments. We had plenty of unforced errors and a ton to improve upon for next weekend, but it is always nice to pull out a win."
Vanessa Edwards recorded her sixth-straight double-double with 52 assists and 16 digs. Nicole Perri led the offense with 19 kills and was followed by Carolyn Bockrath and Amber Clay who both added 14 kills, Clay added 19 digs for the Cadets. Jaden Pickell tallied 11 kills, while Shannel Chong earned 37 digs.
Army won the first two sets with identical 26-24 scores. The Raiders claimed set three 25-23 after going on a 4-2 run to clinch. In set four, the Black Knights fought back to win the game with a 25-22 score.
In set four, the Black Knights and Raiders jockeyed back and forth to tie the score at 14s, 15s, 16s, 17s 18s and 19s. Army tied the score at 14-14 off an attack error by Colgate then earned the go-ahead point on a kill by Perri assisted by Edwards. After a Raiders point and a service error Army held at 16-15 lead. Colgate tied the score at 16-16 off a kill then went ahead one when Army recorded an attacking error.
The Black Knights re-tied the score when the Raiders recorded an error. The teams traded four more points to make the score tied at 19-19. The Cadets then scored back-to-back when Edwards assisted Clay then Clay recorded a service ace. When the Black Knights were leading 21-19 the Raiders called a timeout. Bockrath continued the run with a kill from Edwards.
Clay tallied another kill, this time from Chong to help Army take a 23-19 lead. Colgate scored on the next play before Bockrath recorded another kill. The Raiders brought the score to 24-22 in favor of Army with two Raiders points. The Black Knights won the set and match when Edwards recorded a kill to secure the Army victory.
The Black Knights will be back in action on Oct. 2, when they travel to American for a 7 p.m. matchup against the Eagles.
