Volleyball Travels to American, Loyola

WEST POINT, N.Y. – With a 2-0 Patriot League record in tow, the Army West Point volleyball team will travel to Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Md., to American and Loyola on back-to-back nights. The Black Knights will face the Eagles at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2 and the Greyhounds Saturday at 5 p.m.
"We have a tough challenge this weekend against two very good teams," said head coach Alma Kovaci. "We are happy where we are with our team right now. Tomorrow is another opportunity to get better. I know that our team will be tough and compete hard. We are taking it one game at a time this weekend."
Last week, The Black Knights improved to 10-5 overall after defeating Holy Cross, 3-0, and Colgate, 3-1.
Against Holy Cross, yearling Carolyn Bockrath hit a percentage of .765 with 13 kills and zero errors. She added 14 kills against the Raiders to push her season hitting percentage to .448, which ranks her No. 6 in the country.
Opposite both the Crusaders and Colgate, firstie Nicole Perri tallied 35 kills and led the Black Knights in kills in both games. Firstie Vanessa Edwards extended her double-double streak to six straight with 88 assists and 36 digs last week. She leads the Patriot League in assists per set with 10.28. Defensively, Shannel Chong leads the conference in digs per set with a 4.60 average.
"American is a powerhouse, not only in our conference, but in the nation," added Kovaci. "They are tall, powerful, experienced and effective. This will be a great opportunity for us to face a team like that. We want to be the best, and Friday we face the best."
American enters Friday's match with a 10-5, 2-0 record, which is identical to Army's. In conference play, the Patriots have earned 3-0 wins over both Lafayette and Bucknell.
Allison Cappellino leads American with 152 kills for a 3.10 kills per set average. Monika Smidova paces the offense with 9.51 assists per set and totals 72 kills on the season. Defensively, Hoakalei Dawson leads the Eagles with 3.38 digs per set, while Erin Swartz averages 1.37 blocks per set to lead the conference.
"Loyola will be another tough team to face at their home court," Kovaci said. "They run a really good offense and have some key hitters that rank in the conference. Overall, it will be a great weekend of competition before returning to Gillis Field House."
Loyola has a season record of 5-12 and is 0-2 in Patriot League play. The Greyhounds have earned wins over Howard, South Carolina State, Saint Francis, Manhattan and North Carolina Central. Loyola has fallen to conference opponents Lehigh and Lafayette in three-set matches.
Stacey Kazalas leads the Greyhounds in kills with 194 and averages 3.03 kills per set to rank seventh in the conference. Molly Cichosz follows closely behind with 192 kills for a .157 hitting percentage. Molly Werts leads the team in assists per set with 8.54, which ranks her fifth in the league.
Haley Puddy's 68 total blocks rank seventh amongst NCAA Division I freshmen, and in that same group, she is eighth nationally in total points (215.5). Micah Duzey ranks fifth in the Patriot League in digs per set with an average of 3.57 and 225 total on the year.
