Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision to Rhode Island

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Army West Point volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Rhode Island Friday evening at the Sea Wolves Invitational. The Black Knights came out strong winning the first set, 25-23, but the Rams would come back to win the next three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-21.
Vanessa Wesley led the Black Knights with 13 kills on 21 attempts for a .429 hitting percentage. Amber Clay tallied 12 kills and Carolyn Bockrath added 10. Vanessa Edwards recorded her sixth double-double and 30th in her career in tonight's loss with 42 assists and 10 digs.
In set one, the Black Knights claimed an early 12-5 lead before the Rams (8-3) chipped away at Army's lead to tie things up at 18-18. The Cadets were on the board first with kills from Wesley and Jaden Pickell. The Black Knights earned two points off of Rhode Island errors before Shannel Chong assisted Clay to bring the score to 5-2. Bockrath, Clay and Victoria Reyer tallied kills before a Reyer Block to improve Army's lead to 11-5.
Wesley and Edwards joined together for a blocking point to improve to 12-5. The Rams tied the game at 18-18, and took a 23-18 lead. Points by Welsey Clay and Pickell kept Army in the set. Edwards had back-to-back dumps before assisting Bockrath on the set point to win 25-23.
During the second set, Rhode Island jumped out to a 19-13 lead. The Black Knights were unable to gain momentum for a comeback and fell 25-15.
Rhode Island led 6-3, but points from Bockrath, Edwards and Pickell brought the Black Knights within one at 7-8 in the third set. Rhode Island went on a 5-1 run to jump ahead to 13-8. Army answered back by scoring five straight points and tying the score at 13-all. The Cadets earned two points off back-to-back set errors by the Rams. Pickell and Bockrath both tallied kills in the run, while the fifth point came off a hitting error by Rhode Island. The Rams pulled away to win 25-17.
In set three, Army came out to a 6-2 lead. Edwards earned three assists to Wesley and one to Clay before Ellie Petersen recorded a service ace. Rhode Island tied the score at 12-all. A kill by Wesley and an error by the Rams pushed Army ahead 14-12. The set was re-tied at 15-15, 16-16, 17-17 and 19-19. Rhode Island then went on a 6-2 run to win the set 25-21 and to clinch the match with a 3-1 advantage.
The Black Knights (6-5) return to Pritchard Gymnasium Saturday, Sept. 19 for matches against Columbia (9 a.m.) and host Stony Brook (1 p.m.).
Columbia enters play this weekend at 2-4 on the year following a home invitational in which the Lions went 2-1. Columbia defeated Northeastern and NJIT before the Lions fell to American. The Black Knights hold a 10-4 advantage in the all-time series over the Lions.
Zoe Jacobs has tallied a team-leading 3.15 kills/set for the Lions, while Katarina Jovicic leads Columbia with an even .400 hitting percentage. Alex Reale leads the team with 9.60 assists/set, while Cassie Wes has a team-leading 3.86 digs/set.
The Sea Wolves enter the weekend with a record of 2-10 with wins over Buffalo, 3-1, and Holy Cross, 3-1. Army and Stony Brook are tied 3-3 in the all-time series that began in 1979.
Stephanie McFadden enters the weekend fifth nationally in aces per set with 0.67. Kathy Fletcher leads the team in kills with 146 on 473 attempts and McKyla Brooks follows with 124 for a .289 hitting percentage. Morgan Kath paces the offense with 8.56 assists per set. Defensively, Brooks totals 22 blocks on the season and Nicole Vogel averages 2.84 digs per set.
"We look forward to playing hard this weekend and finishing our last tournament on a high note," Kovaci added. "We feel we are a much improved team from last season, and are really excited to open Patriot League contests at home with Holy Cross on Tuesday."
