STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Army West Point volleyball team closed out the Sea Wolves Invitational with two wins Saturday. The Black Knights swept Ivy League foe Columbia, 3-0, then turned around to defeated tournament host Stony Brook, 3-1.
"It was great to finish the tournament season on a high," said head coach Alma Kovaci. "One of our goals this season was to win against our Ivy League opponents and we defeated all three. We are improving as a team and that is great to see. Our pin attackers have become more productive, while our middle stays strong. It is nice to become more of a complete team, it is crucial."
Amber Clay led the Black Knights offensively with 13 kills on 28 attempts. She also added eight digs in the match to help the Black Knights to victory. Carolyn Bockrath also produced for the Cadets with 4.0 points per set. Vanessa Edwards paced the Black Knights with 44 assists and 10 digs.
In set one, The Black Knights jumped out to a 6-1 lead, but Columbia jumped back to tie the score at 12-all. The Lions continued to tally points taking a 24-21 advantage, but Army rallied to win 29-27. Jaden Pickell tied the score at 27-27 and then a kill by Clay and another by Pickell clinched the set.
Army came out on a 6-1 run to start set two. Then, six straight points brought the Cadets ahead 16-6. Five errors by Columbia provided for two of the points, and a kill by Nicole Perri. The Black Knights coasted to win the second set 25-15.
The third set was a back and forth battle between the Lions and Black Knights. With the set tied at 12-12, the Black Knights went on a 5-2 to take a 17-14 lead. Army improved its lead with four straight points. Once the set score was 22-14 in favor of the Cadets, a kill by Clay and two errors by the Lions secured the win by a score of 25-20.
