Women’s Rugby Faces Tough Matchup with Norwich

WEST POINT, N.Y. – After claiming back-to-back impressive wins over conference rivals AIC and Quinnipiac, the Army West Point women's rugby team will face another tough matchup as they travel to Norwich for a mid-morning meeting with the Cadets.
Army enters the game with a record of 2-0 and will look to knock off Norwich, who enters the afternoon with a mark of 1-0.

THE GAME
The Black Knights travel to heated rival Norwich, squaring off with the Cadets at 11 a.m. from Northfield, Vt. Army is riding off of a thrilling 29-24 victory over Quinnipiac, posting a second half comeback in which they scored 22 unanswered points to erase a 24-7 deficit. Norwich enters the afternoon with a mark of 1-0, edging AIC last weekend by a score of 48-32 in their season opener.
LAST MEETING
The Black Knights last met with the Cadets in 15s action on Oct. 11, 2014 when they dropped a 51-21 decision on the road.
Norwich got the scoring started, getting up by 17-0 through 14 minutes of play. Kate Roose would score her first of two tries on the afternoon at the 31st minute mark, with Carissa Pekny adding the conversion, to pull Army within 10 of the Cadets' lead
Norwich would add another try in the waning minutes of the first half to take a 22-7 lead into the break.
Army opened up the second half with an offensive explosion, as Roose added her second try of the game and Penky converted kick. With the score 22-14 in favor of the Cadets, Pekny added a try and conversion in the 49th minute to pull Army within just one of the lead
The Black Knights, however, were unable to hold back the Norwich offense, as the Cadets would end the game with 29 unanswered points to claim the 51-21 victory
ARMY LAST TIME OUT
Army claimed a 29-24 victory over Quinnipiac in a thrilling comeback from Anderson Rugby Complex last weekend.
Army trailed by as much as 24-7 through 48 minutes of play, but rattled off four straight scores to capture the win.
Quinnipiac got things started, opening up the game with back-to-back tries and successful conversions to take the 14-0 lead through 13 minutes of play.
The Black Knights would respond in the 38th minute as Nicole Heavirland scored her first of the game and Arianna Efaw converted the kick to send Army into the half trailing 14-7.
The Bobcats kept the pressure on in the opening minutes of the second half, scoring back-to-back tries in the 42nd and 48th minutes to push ahead by a score of 24-7.
Captain Mariah Caid-Loos got things going for the Black Knights in the 54th minute as she dove into the try zone for the score.
Heavirland would score three unanswered tries, converting one of her own scores, including the game-winner in the 82nd minute to give Army the win.
NORWICH LAST TIME OUT
Norwich opened up its 2015 fall season with a 48-32 win over American International College last weekend on the road.
Sophomore Frankie Sands and senior Hannah Bell each scored two tries to lead the Cadets' offense in the high-scoring affair. Both teams scored on their first four possessions of the game.
Junior Sarah Peyton, sophomores Katie Smith and Alanna Girardin, as well as freshman Sheila Decker each scored tries as well for Norwich as it stayed perfect against AIC in 15s matches all-time.
Freshman Bayli Jenski went 4-for-8 on conversions in her first collegiate game kicking for the Cadets.
ARMY WHO TO WATCH: NICOLE HEAVIRLAND
Competing in her first collegiate 15s season, Heavirland has made an enormous impact with for the Black Knights in her sophomore season at the Academy.
The Whitefish, Mont., native leads the 2015 fall squad with four tries on the season, posting all of her points in the 29-24 win over Quinnipiac last weekend. In that contest, she opened up the scoring for the Black Knights, posting a try in the 38th minute of action. In the second half, she led a comeback in which she scored three unanswered tries, also converting one of her scores, to send the Black Knights to victory. She accounted for 22 of the team's 29 points.
"She brings that experience, she brings that x-factor or whatever you want to call it," said head coach Bill LeClerc. "She's obviously one of the best athletes here at West Point. She's got confidence in herself and she gives confidence to her teammates and they work hard for her."
HEAVIRLAND COPS AAA HONORS
After leading the Army West Point women's rugby squad to a 29-24 victory over conference foe Quinnipiac Heavirland was named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week.
This is the first AAA Athlete of the Week nod of the season and second of her career for Heavirland.
Competing in her first collegiate 15s game, Heavirland scored the opening try of the game for the Black Knights in the 38th minute of action, sending Army into the break down 14-7.
With the Bobcats holding a 24-12 advantage mid-way through the second half, Heavirland began her scoring onslaught, rattling off three straight tries in the 61st, 69th and 82nd minutes.
In the 69th minute she tied the game at 24-24 after successfully converting her own try. With stoppage time expiring, she found the try zone in the 82nd minute to put the Black Knights on top 29-24 and ensure the win.
In total, the Whitefish, Mont., native accounted for 22 of the team's 29 points on the afternoon.
CLASS RINGS
The Class of 2016 received their class rings in a ceremony held at Trophy Point on Aug. 28, 2015. A time-honored West Point tradition, the Class of 2016's rings contain gold from 356 West Point graduates donated to the West Point Association of Graduates in addition to steel melted down from the World Trade Center.
UP NEXT
Army West Point will continue its road stretch, traveling to State College, Pa., for a pair of matchups with two of the nation's top teams. They'll battle Lindenwood at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 25 before taking on host Penn State on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 9 a.m. The Black Knights will return to Anderson Rugby Complex on Oct. 10 when they host American International.
