July 28, 2015 | Women's Soccer
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Michele Galvin's header in the box in the 79th minute lifted Binghamton to a 1-0 win over Army in a non-conference women's soccer match Monday evening at Clinton Field. The loss snapped the Black Knights (5-4-1) three-game win streak and the Bearcats (5-4-1) three-game winless streak.
Army held the upper hand in shots showing a 10-2 advantage in the first half with Ruthie Rosenbergerfiring the lone shot on goal in the 18th minute that starting goalkeeping Carrie Martin leaped high in the air to knock the ball away.
The Black Knights ripped off eight shots before the Bearcats got off their first shot of the game in the 34th minute when Katie Corcoran's attempt was rejected by Army keeper Jordan Cassalia.
"Tonight we played some very good soccer in the first half," commented Army head coach Marcia McDermott, "and into the second half at times. We have to figure out how to finish off opportunities earlier in the game, and that is an important step for us to solve."
Binghamton outshot Army 8-7 in the second half with the Bearcats getting off four shots, three on goal, over the first 13 minutes of action. The Black Knights had three shots on goal by Candace Stewart, Joey Molacek and Anna Lail, the most dangerous by Lail on a header to the corner that was saved by Gaby Gold, the second of three Bearcat keepers, in the 65th minute.
Before Galvin's game winner, Cassalia nixed a dangerous chance on a close shot by Katie O'Neill following a free kick by Rebecca Raber in the 70th minute.
Binghamton beat Army with a header in the box by Galvin on her lone shot of the game off an assist by Allison Mack with just over 11 minutes remaining. Cassalia denied the Bearcats the insurance goal two minutes later on a shot by O'Neill in finishing with six saves.
Army, which had six corner kicks in the second half and seven for the game, took its final corner in the 83rd minute by Rosenberger, but goalkeeper Stephanie Speirs came out of the net and punched the ball away to deny the Black Knights. Three minutes later a long shot by Katie Holderwas high. Army outshot the Bearcats 17-10 and held a 7-1 corner kick advantage.
The Black Knights return to Patriot League play Saturday hosting preseason favorite Boston University. Army is 1-0-0 in the league following a 2-1 double overtime win over Bucknell Saturday, while the Terriers are 0-1-0 following a 1-0 loss to defending league champions Navy last Friday.
"Boston University and Navy are outstanding teams" noted McDermott. "In the Patriot League, every game will be a difficult competition for everybody involved. We have tremendous respect for Boston University, and now will turn our attention to preparing for them."
