WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army matched shots with preseason Patriot League favorite Boston University with four in each half, but a Terrier goal by Erica Kosienski in the 38th minute proved to be all that was needed for a 1-0 women's soccer victory over the Black Knights Saturday afternoon at Clinton Field.
The win is the first Patriot League victory for BU, who joined the conference this year, as the Terriers improved to 6-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 in league play, while Army fell to 5-5-1 and 1-1-0.
Army had four dangerous chances prior to BU scoring in the first half. Three of the shots were on goal and the other hitting the crossbar with two each off the foot of Joey Molacek and Katie Holder. Holder booted Army's first shot on goal in the ninth minute, Molacek followed with back-to-back shots over a span of 54 seconds with her first attempt hitting the crossbar and her second from close range rejected by a defender. Holder closed out that flurry with a shot on goal from the left side.
Boston University's Kosienski got behind Army's defense and fired a shot from inside the 18 past Army goalkeeper Jordan Cassalia with just seven minutes left to halftime scoring her third goal of the season set up by Jenna Fisher.
Neither team was able to provide consistent offensive pressure in the second half with Army getting off one shot on goal and the Terriers booting two.
BU had three dangerous chances over a nine-minute span starting with a header in the box by Kosienski that went over the net followed by a pair of shots on goal by Erin Mullen and Emma Clark that were rejected by Cassalia.
Terrier goalkeeper Andrea Green, who came into the match with a league-leading 0.52 goals against average along with four shutouts, made a diving save to her left in rejecting Kimberly An's free kick in the 80th minute. Eight minutes later, she grabbed the ball following a long free kick by Molly McGuigan to deny Army again and preserve BU's sixth shutout of the season.
Both teams had a corner kick in the first half, with BU recording two in the second half for a 3-1 advantage. Cassian and Green each finished with three saves.
The Black Knights will look to rebound when they host league rival Colgate this Wednesday, 5 p.m., at Clinton Field in closing out a three-game home stretch. Army continues league play when it heads to Maryland for a 7 p.m. match on Saturday, Oct. 5, with Loyola in the first-ever meeting
ON THE PITCH: Boston University and Loyola are the two newest members of the Patriot League, expanding the conference to 10 teams ... today's game was the first between Army and BU as members of the Patriot league ... the Terriers and Black Knights first met in 1996 at the NY Spaulding Cup in Oneonta, N.Y., with BU posting a 4-1 decision ...it is the second shutout loss of the week for the Black Knights.
