Home Runs Propel Lafayette Past Baseball
April 05, 2015 | Baseball
EASTON, Pa. - Three home runs, including two by Lafayette's Steven Cohen, lifted the Leopards to an 8-7 victory over the Army baseball team on Sunday afternoon at Kamine Stadium. Army's Jacob Page hit a two-run shot of his own, but it wasn't enough as the Black Knights dropped their third consecutive contest.
The Leopards improved to 3-4 in Patriot League play, while Army dropped to 3-4 in the conference with the result.
Cohen homered to lead off the bottom of the first inning and the Leopards added an unearned run to take an early 2-0 lead. The Black Knights got a run back in the top of the second when Alex Dickerson started the inning with a double and later scored on a groundout by Ryan Levenhagen.
Trailing 2-1 with one out in the top of the third, Mark McCants tied the game with a single that scored Ben Smith, who reached on an error. Page followed and launched a two-run shot over the center field wall off Lafayette starter Toby Schwartz to put the Black Knights in front 4-2.
Army left-hander Julian Larimer pitched a scoreless third, with a pair of strikeouts to keep the lead at 4-2, but the Leopards got to him in the fourth. Cohen hit his second bomb, a two-run shot to center, then Campbell Lipe blasted a two-run homer of his own as Lafayette took the lead for good at 6-4.
The Leopards tacked on an insurance run in the fifth and the sixth before Army's comeback attempt in the seventh.
Trailing 8-4 going into its final at-bat, back-to-back doubles by Alex Jensen and Smith pushed one run across and forced Lafayette to go to the bullpen for Ryan Callanan. A groundout, plus an error made it 8-6, before Lafayette made another pitching change. Connor McMahon entered with one on and one out with Page at the plate. He ripped a RBI double to right field, but was thrown out trying to stretch the two-bagger into a triple for the second out of the inning. McMahon completed the save with a strikeout as Lafayette held on for the 8-7 victory.
Schwartz earned the victory after conceding six runs (five earned) on nine hits. He struck out 10 and did not walk a batter. Larimer took the loss for Army after being charged with eight runs (six earned) on ten hits. He fanned seven, hit three and didn't give up a walk in five-plus innings of work. Justin French came on in the sixth in relief of Larimer and punched out two.
