Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Coppin State
March 07, 2015 | Baseball
KINSTON, N.C. - An 11-3 victory over Coppin State helped Army salvage a split of Saturday's doubleheader after the Eagles took the first game, 4-3, at Grainger Stadium.
Army won three of its four games on the weekend after sweeping Mount St. Mary's on Friday and moved to 6-4 on the season. Coppin State dips to 1-5 in 2015.
The Black Knights posted a double-digit total for the fourth time this season with nine hits and took advantage of six Coppin State errors. Army scored in all but three innings, including two runs in the first, fourth and fifth frames and four runs in the eighth. Mark McCants delivered the knockout blow with a three-run homer in the eighth inning. The blast cleared the right field wall and was McCants' second of the season.
Ryan Levenhagen and Jacob Page each added two hits and scored twice in support of Patrick Gardner's second win of the season. Gardner pitched five innings and gave up three runs on eight hits and punched out three. Garrison Franklin tossed a scoreless sixth, prior to Johnny Griffith throwing two innings of one-hit relief. Matt Ball came on and threw a perfect ninth with two strikeouts to end the game.
Army jumped on Coppin State starting pitcher Yayha Muhammad with a pair of runs in the first inning and the Black Knights led 3-0 after two full frames. McCants and Jon Rosoff each drove in a run in the first before Harold Earls singled home Jacob Page, who led off the second inning with a base hit of his own.
Darien Percell's fourth inning single helped Coppin State get back in the game as part of a two-run fourth, but Army scored two unearned runs off Eagles' reliever Jhar Devilme in the home half to make it a 5-2 lead.
Bryant Miranda's leadoff double set the table for Coppin State in the fifth and he later scored on Lance Montano's sacrifice fly to pull the Eagles within two. Levenhagen opened the Army portion of the fifth with a base hit and Page's triple, combined with an error allowed him to score on the play. Army led 7-3 and never looked back in the eventual 11-3 triumph.
Next up for Army is a trip to Florida for a four-game series against Massachusetts on March 14-15 in Tampa. The Black Knights will play a pair of doubleheaders against the Minutemen, one game at Miami (March 17) and four games versus Harvard.
