Harvard Rallies Past Army

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Harvard scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning and beat Army, 8-5, Friday in the opening game of a doubleheader at Jack Russell Memorial Stadium.
Army took a 3-2 lead after six innings when Alex Dickerson knocked in a run before Harvard rallied.
Ben Smith had three hits, including a pair of doubles and Alex Jensen had two hits for the Black Knights who fell to 9-7.
Alex Robinett took the loss on the mound, striking out seven in 6.2 innings of work.
Robinett started strong, striking out the first two hitters he faced.
Army took its first lead in the bottom of the first. With one out, Smith singled and Jon Rosoff walked. A ground out to first advanced the runners and Jensen delivered a run-scoring single. Jensen later got caught in a rundown and Rosoff hustled home for a 2-0 advantage.
Harvard got a run back in the second. After Robinett retired the first five hitters he faced, Drew Reid singled and Conor Quinn walked. D.J. Link singled to plate a run before Robinett picked off a runner at second to end the inning.
Robinett allowed a pair of runners in the third on a single and hit by pitch before recording a strikeout to end the inning with runners on first and third.
Army had a pair of runners on in the third when Smith doubled and Mark McCants worked a walk but a fly out and fielders' choice kept it a 2-1 contest.
Harvard tied the game in the fifth. With one out, Steve Dill walked. He was forced out at second on a Mike Martin fielders' choice. After a Jake McGuigan single, Mitch Klug singled to plate Martin. McGuigan was thrown out trying to take third with the score knotted at 2.
Robinett kept the game tied, registering two more strikeouts in the sixth.
Jensen singled for his second base hit of the game to open the sixth. Jacob Page laid down a two-strike sacrifice to advance Jensen and Dickerson singled up the middle to give Army a 3-2 lead.
Robinett struck out the first hitter he faced in the seventh and then allowed a single to Link. Pinch-hitter Matt Rothenberg singled off of the glove of third baseman Jon Rosoff. The ball rolled to the fence, allowing Link to score. Mike Martin reached on an error and Jake McGuigan hit a two-run home run. Another Army error led to another run and Harvard led 7-3 ending Robinett's day. Drew Reid singled in another run to close the scoring.
Army didn't go away in the seventh. Kris Lindner led off with a double and Smith doubled again to score Lindner. A pair of ground outs scored Smith but Army could get no closer.
Army and Harvard will close the four-game series Saturday with a single game at 11 a.m.
GAME NOTES: Army wore its all white uniforms with black hats ... Army starting pitcher Alex Robinett and Harvard's Nick Gruener played little league together in Saudi Arabia. Robinett spent his first 14 years there before moving to Bend, Ore., and holds both English and American citizenship ... The game was played at the former spring training home of the Philadelphia Phillies ... Former catcher 2nd LT Connor Love, a 2014 graduate now attending Oxford for graduate school, was in attendance.
