TAMPA, Fla. - Harvard scored four runs in the third and added two more in the sixth and beat Army, 11-8, Thursday afternoon under sunny skies at the New York Yankees Minor League Complex.
Harvard won its third straight contest and improved to 8-8 after winning the first of a four-game series against Army.
Kris Lindner had four hits and scored three runs and Mark McCants had three hits for Army, which dropped to 9-6 overall and 3-2 on its spring trip to Florida.
Army wasted little time going on top. In the top of the first, Lindner led off with an opposite single and moved to second on a fielders' choice. He took third on wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Jon Rosoff for an early 1-0 lead.
Harvard responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning as Ethan Ferreira and Mitch Klug collected back-to-back run scoring hits.
The Black Knights answered in the top of the second. Alex Jensen was hit by a pitch and went to third when Jacob Page singled. Stu Schley grounded out to score Jensen and Page took second. Alex Dickerson singled to plate Page. Following a ground out, Lindner singled to score Dickerson for a 4-2 Army lead.
Harvard took a 6-4 lead in the third inning when Tanner Anderson followed a sacrifice fly with a double that knocked in two runs. Mike Martin singled to score Anderson.
Ferreira extended the Harvard lead to 7-4 with a solo home run in the fourth.
Army cut the deficit to two in the top of the fifth. Lindner led off the inning with his third hit of the game and moved to third on a pair of ground outs. McCants singled with two strikeouts for his second hit of the game to score Lindner to make it a 7-5 contest.
Ferreira continued his solid day with a two-run double that added to the Harvard lead and made it a 9-5 lead after six innings.
Army pushed across two more in the top of the seventh. Lindner singled, as did Ben Smith with one out. The runners moved up on a wild pitch and Rosoff, who made two stellar plays at third in the previous inning, knocked in a run. McCants' third hit of the game scored Smith to cut the Harvard lead to two, 9-7.
Jake McGuiggan collected his third hit of the game to extend the Harvard lead to 10-7 after seven inning.
Army continued to battle. In the eighth Schley singled, took second on an error and scored on a Brandon Lee single to trim the deficit to two again, 10-8.
Harvard pushed the lead back to three in the eighth with a run-scoring single from Martin.
Army will continue its four-game series with Harvard with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. at Bright House Network Field in Clearwater, Fla. , on Friday.
GAME NOTES: Army wore its gray road uniforms ... Alex Dickerson made his second consecutive start at first base ... Former Head Baseball Officer Ray Nelson, now retired, was among the crowd .. Ben Smith threw out a runner attempting to steal in the second inning, the sixth person he has thrown out this season ... Stu Schley made his first career start on the mound for Army. He stayed in the game as the designated hitter.
