Army Falls To Maine First Game In Florida
March 13, 2015 | Softball
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Maine scored four runs late in the game and Molly Flowers and Annie Kennedy combined on the shutout as the Bears defeated Army, 5-0, at the Eddie C. Moore Complex Friday afternoon in the Black Knights' opener in their spring trip to Florida.
Jessica Burk's two-run double scored Janelle Bouchard, who led off with a single, to stake Maine to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, but Army hurler Caroline Smith (1-5) stranded her at third base.
The Bears (11-11) added a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth on Rachel Harvey's single to pull out to a 3-0 lead.
Flowers, pitching 5.2 innings to earn the win, limited Army to just two hits before giving way to Kennedy with two outs in the top of the fifth following Hailey Megge's single. Kennedy struck out the next batter looking en route to retiring all four batters she faced to pick up the save.
Samantha Ralph tripled home a run and scored on a single by Harvey (2-for-3 with three RBI) in the home half of the sixth to boost Maine's lead to 5-0.
Smith collected Army's first hit in the top of the second in her first at bat with a single up the middle and moved to second on the throw to third retiring Kristen McPeek, who reached on an error, on the relay from the outfield.
The Black Knights, playing eight games during their spring break in Florida, will look to bounce back later in the day against Toledo.
