Softball Suffers 3-2 Heartbreaker To Charlotte 49ers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Lexi Betancourt allowed two hits and two runs over eight innings, and Sam Slade drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning in lifting the Charlotte 49ers to a 3-2 win over Army in the final game for both Saturday afternoon at the First Pitch Classic.
Sophomore reliever Kristen West suffered the hard luck loss when the game went into the eighth inning forcing the international tie breaker rule when the last batter from the previous inning is placed on second base due to time restraints.
After Betancourt retired the Black Knights on a strikeout, infield popup and fielder's choice in the top of the eighth, the 49ers capitalized in the home half when Haley Pace moved to third on Slade's bunt and beat the throw home.
Army (3-6) grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on leadoff batter Kasey McCravey's home run, but the 49ers answered with a pair of runs on Jackie Keinsmith's fielder's choice RBI and Courtney Carroll's RBI single in the home half to pull in front 2-1.
The Black Knights tied the game in the top of the third without the benefit on a hit capitalizing on back-to-back walks, a stolen base and a fielder's choice RBI by designated player Emily Gray to knot the score 2-2.
Sophomore starter Caroline Smith, touched for four hits and a pair of runs, retired the side in the fourth inning. She worked her way out of a jam following a walk and infield hit in the fifth on a double play by second baseman Alee Rashenskas before turning the circle over to Kristen West in the sixth.
After being touched for the run in the third, Betancourt retired 10 straight batters before yielding a walk with one out in the sixth, then mowed down the next eight to pick up the decision.
Army's staff was just as efficient with West (2-2) and Smith touched for just five hits. After taking over the circle in the sixth, West retired six straight batters heading into the eighth inning.
It is the second loss that the Black Knights suffered at the tournament to Charlotte, having fallen 8-3 in Friday's game.
Army closes out the three-day First Pitch Classic taking on Quinnipiac Sunday at 1 p.m. at D.S. Phillips Softball Complex.
