Wrestling Set to Take On No. 18 North Carolina
December 10, 2015 | Wrestling
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point wrestling team will conclude the 2015 portion of its season with a dual meet at Poly Prep in Brooklyn, N.Y., versus 18th-ranked North Carolina on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m.
"It will be another tough dual meet for us with another top-20 team in the country," said head coach Kevin Ward. "We go into it seeing an opportunity where if we really perform well and fight hard, we could get a win against a top-20 team. To do that, we know that we really need to be sharp and have a really good performance.
"We can't go into it hoping that we might get some wins; we need to go into it ready to go out on the mat and make things happen for us. If we do that, we put ourselves in a position to get a good win."
The Black Knights are coming off a program-best 14th-place finish at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas last weekend. Army placed three wrestlers on the podium as Russell Parsons Jr. took fifth at 157 pounds, Brian Harvey finished sixth at 174 pounds and Bryce Barnes captured seventh at 197 pounds.
The Tar Heels come in with a 4-1 record overall with their lone defeat coming at the Northeast Duals versus Rutgers, 19-13. They defeated Minnesota 20-17 and Binghamton 19-12 on Nov. 15, for a 2-1 record at the event. The 18th-ranked team in the nation also earned a 25-12 decision over Gardner-Webb on Nov. 21, and a 24-12 victory over Appalachian State on Nov. 29.
Both sides come into the meet with two ranked wrestlers. For Army, Parsons Jr. is 15th at 157 pounds and Harvey is 19th at 174. For UNC, Evan Henderson remains at No. 7 at 141 pounds while Ethan Ramos jumped one spot to fifth at 165.
"We feel like we match up pretty well at some weights. There are a couple matches where they are favored, a couple matches where we are favored, and quite a few toss up matches," added Ward.
