BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Army West Point wrestling team fought hard, but was unable to hold off 18th-ranked North Carolina, dropping an 18-14 decision at Poly Prep on Saturday.
"I thought we fought hard," said head coach Kevin Ward. "I am proud of our team. We competed hard almost the entire time, but a few lapses in intensity cost us the win. We had the meet in our hands, and a few mistakes came back and cost us. I feel like we can get better from this When you compete hard, you get better, and we did just that tonight."
The Black Knights are now 1-3 on the season in dual meets with all three losses coming against ranked opponents. Additionally, they took the only two bonus point victories of the meet.
"Those bonus point wins put us in a position to win," Ward added. "Freshman Austin Harry getting a major decision late in the match was crucial for us, and Brian Harvey wrestles hard every time he steps out on the mat."
Army's third dual meet of the season against a ranked opponent started with the 125-pound match between Conner Ziegler and Tyrone Klump. Klump gave the Tar Heels an early lead with a 9-3 decision over Ziegler.
The 133-pound matchup between Austin Harry and Anthony Bosco followed with Harrytaking a 12-3 major decision to give the Black Knights 4-3 lead and pushing Harry above the .500 mark on the season both in duals and overall.
UNC's Evan Henderson, who is the seventh-ranked wrestler in his class, then topped Everett with a 3-1 decision before Christian Barber took an 3-1 decision over Mark Marchetti in the 149-pound match.
At the halfway point in the dual, the score was 9-7 in favor of the Tar Heels after 15th-ranked Russell Parsons Jr. earned an 8-2 decision over Robert Henderson.
Andrew Mendel then stepped onto the mat against fifth-ranked Ethan Ramos for the 165-pound bout. UNC came away with three points after the returning All-American narrowly escaped with a 10-9 decision, extending the lead to five.
The 174-match pitted 19th-ranked Brian Harvey against John Michael Staudenmayer, with the Black Knights coming out on top. Harvey, in his first competition of the 2015-16 campaign as a ranked wrestler, earned his 80th-career win with an 8-0 major decision against the three-time national qualifier. The score then became 12-11 in favor of North Carolina.
Samson Imonode faced off against Alex Utley, and an 8-3 decision extended UNC's lead to four. Rocco Caywood then defeated Chip Ness by decision, 7-5 in his first-career dual match.
The deciding match was between Trevor Smith and Cory Daniel, with Daniel escaping with a 5-4 decision.
The Black Knights will return to the mat on Jan. 1, 2016, as the team heads down to the Southern Scuffle, hosted by Tennessee at Chattanooga.
