COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Air Force's defense limited the Army West Point football team to 169 yards of total offense in a 20-3 victory for the Falcons in the Army-Air Force Game presented by USAA on Saturday afternoon at Falcon Stadium.
The result dropped the Black Knights to 2-7 on the season, while Air Force improved to 6-3 overall.
Air Force quarterback Karson Roberts threw for 156 yards and two scores, both to Garrett Griffin, who had three catches for 32 yards on the day. D.J. Johnson led the Falcons on the ground with 43 yards on nine carries.
Ahmad Bradshaw had 42 yards rushing on 20 carries, while Aaron Kemper ran for 47 yards on 14 carries. Edgar Poe made one reception for 33 yards and Nicholas Black had one catch for 12 yards.
On defense, Andrew King made 11 total tackles, while Jeremy Timpf made 10 tackles, 6 solo, and Rhyan England added eight stops.
The two teams were scoreless through the opening 15 minutes as each team punted three times. The Black Knights forced three-and-outs on the first two Air Force possessions, but were unable to capitalize on starting field positions at their own 33 and Air Force's 45-yard lines. Air Force gained 57 yards to Army's 53 in the first quarter.
Air Force punted again early in the second quarter, but the Falcons defense forced another Army three-and-out and earned their best starting field position at their own 42-yard line with 11:01 left in the half.
Back-to-back first downs on rushes by Jacobi Owens (16 yards) and Tyler Williams (13 yards) put the Falcons in the red zone at the Army 13. Owens went up the middle for seven on first down, but the Army defense held the Falcons on second and third down to force a 22-yard field goal by Luke Strebel to put Air Force in front 3-0.
Following another Army punt, Air Force added to its advantage with an eight-play, 83-yard touchdown drive. On second down from the Air Force 19, Roberts hit Garrett Brown down the seam for a gain of 59. Ben Washington gained five on third-and-one three plays later to set up the Falcons with a fresh set of downs at the Army eight-yard line. Facing third-and-goal from the three, Roberts faked a handoff and found Garret Griffin open in the flat for a touchdown that gave Air Force a 10-0 cushion at halftime.
Army had the ball to start the second half, but was unable to pick up a first down and Tardieu's 52-yard punt was downed inside the five-yard line for the second time on the afternoon. The Falcons punted the ball back after gaining one first down on a Roberts keeper as Army started on its own 35.
Kemper gained five to start the drive, before consecutive runs of four and three by Bradshaw moved the chains out near midfield. On second-and-8, Bradshaw broke two tackles on a pickup of 16 yards down to the Air Force 34-yard line. The drive stalled there, but Daniel Grochowski drilled a 47-yard field goal with the wind at his back to put the Black Knights on the board with 4:18 on the third quarter clock.
Air Force responded with a scoring drive of its own. On third-and-7 from their own 38, the Falcons connected on a 34-yard pass from Roberts to Jalen Robinette down the left sideline. Strebel kicked a 42-yard field goal at the start of the fourth quarter to make it a two-possession game.
Bradshaw and the Black Knights were in a third-and-8 at their own 27 when he dropped back and hit Edgar Poe down the sideline for a 33-yard grab. A holding penalty moved Army back to midfield and Army punted to the Air Force 11, Tardieu's fourth punt inside the 20-yard line of the day.
The Falcons took over and marched down inside Army territory with a seven-yard run by Johnson and Bryan Driskell's 28-yard scamper. Roberts then passed right to Brown for a catch-and-run of 24-yards to the Army 30-yard line. On third down from the Army 23, Roberts connected with Griffin for his second receiving touchdown of the game. The successful extra point made it 20-3 with 8:11 remaining.
On the next drive, Army turned it over on downs. Air Force took over and kneeled down for the 20-3 win.
Army returns home to Michie Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 14 for a noon kickoff against Tulane. The game can be seen live on CBS Sports Network.
