Volleyball Hosts Colgate for Annual Dig Pink Game
October 23, 2015 | Volleyball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point volleyball team returns to Gillis Field House Saturday for its annual Dig Pink game presented by St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital. The Black Knights will host Patriot League foe Colgate on Oct. 24 for a 4 p.m. matchup.
Â
Army improved its winning streak to six-straight after a 3-1 victory over Holy Cross on Tuesday. The Black Knights have only dropped three set in the last six matches and are 16-6 overall and 6-3 in the conference.
Â
"I think the team is doing really well and we are really excited with our offense right now," said head coach Alma Kovaci. "Vanessa is running a really good offense and we are clicking on all cylinders. I think we still have to work harder on our serving and passing game, but once we get that going we are going to be a very tough team to beat."
Â
Vanessa Wesley was named the Patriot League Athlete of the Week after she led the Black Knights with 27 kills to average 4.50 kills per set against Lehigh and Bucknell. Against the Bison, she tallied 14 kills with seven coming in the first set. Wesley also led the team in blocks with seven.
Â
Three Black Knights had double-double performances against the Crusaders. Nicole Perri led the offense with 18 kills and a career-high 14 digs. Amber Clay chipped in 17 kills and 14 digs, and Vanessa Edwards recorded 55 assists and 12 digs.
Â
Carolyn Bockrath ranks first in the league and fifth nationally with her .437 hitting percentage, while Wesley is second with an average of .421.
Edwards is the only setter in the conference who averages double-digit assists with 10.40 assists per set. She has 14 double-doubles this season and has recorded 38 in her career. Shannel Chong is No. 1 in digs per set with an average of 4.58.
Â
"We played Colgate really early in the season when we were trying to find our lineups and I think Colgate is playing very good volleyball," said Kovaci. "They are gaining some confidence so they have an advantage attacking. Our offense is very strong right now and I think if we continue to attack it will be hard to defend against us. "
Â
The Raiders enter the weekend 8-12 overall and 6-3 in conference play. The Black Knights defeated Colgate 3-1 earlier this season with Perri (19k) and Edwards (55a, 16d) leading the offense. Kathleen Harris leads the Raiders with 3.14 kills per set and 3.65 points per set.
There will be a free youth clinic put on by the Black Knights for grades K-8 after the match. The clinic is free and open to the public.
