WEST POINT, N.Y. – Coming in on a five-match winning streak, the Army West Point volleyball team will travel to Holy Cross Tuesday, Oct. 20, for a Patriot League matchup against the Crusaders at 7 p.m.
"We are looking forward to the start of the second half of Patriot League play," said head coach Alma Kovaci. "The team is getting better and looking more confident on the court. Our goals are to continue to serve and pass at a high level and stress the opponent with our block and defense game."
Last weekend, the Black Knights earned a pair of sweeps over Lehigh and Bucknell to help Army improved to 15-6 overall and 7-1 in the conference.
Yearling Vanessa Wesley was tabbed the Patriot League Athlete of the Week after leading the Black Knights in kills and blocks this past weekend. Wesley tallied 13 kills against the Mountain Hawks to average 4.33 per set. She also added two solo and one assisted block.
Opposite the Bison, Wesley recorded 14 kills, seven of which came in the first set. Her hitting percentage was .500 with only three errors.
Yearling Amber Clay recorded a career-high 24 digs versus Bucknell to lead the team defensively, while adding six kills. Firstie Nicole Perri added 18 kills on the weekend and four blocks.
The Crusaders enter the match with a 5-16 overall record and a 2-6 mark in the league. Holy Cross has earned conference wins over Navy (3-2) and Lafayette (3-0).
"Holy Cross has key hitters that consistently lead the conference in points per game," said Kovaci. "It will be important to defend against them but as always, our focus will be controlling the game on our side."
Mandy Sifferlen leads the Crusaders and conference in kills per set with 3.83, and she totals 299 on the season. She also ranks first in points per set with 4.35. M.C. Magner is third in the Patriot League with 4.07 digs per set, while Mary Mullen ranks No. 5 in the league in blocks per set with an average of 1.00 per set.
Earlier this season, the Black Knights defeated Holy Cross 3-0 at Gillis Field House. Perri was the main producer for the Black Knights with 16 kills and only four errors. Carolyn Bockrath hit at .765 percent in the match with 13 kills. Vanessa Edwards recorded 36 assists and 20 digs. Clay also had a hand in the game with nine kills and 13 digs, while Shannel Chong recorded 15 digs and nine assists.
