Experience Leads Army into Day Two at Boise State
October 01, 2015 | Men's Tennis
BOISE, IDAHO – The members of the Army West Point's men's tennis team that made the trip out west for the Boise State Invite have set the tone on the first day as half of the Cadets in singles play and two of three doubles teams went undefeated on Thursday.
The singles flight is an open draw format for 128 while the doubles flight is for 64. There are 70 competitors in singles and 34 pairs in doubles.
With five of the six players in the competition being upper-classmen, the Black Knights used their veteran leadership and experience to set themselves up for a deep push into the four-day tournament. Senior Harrison McCormick, alongside juniors Kyle Barnes and Sam Lampman, forced their way into the round of 32 in singles earning victories after a first-round bye. McCormick took his match in straight sets, 7-6(2), 6-2; while Barnes won in impressive fashion, 6-2,6-1. Lampman was able to finish strong to earn his three-set victory, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
"Even with the rain pushing everything indoors and causing a delay, I thought we played really well today," said head coach Jim Poling. "Our guys fought hard today. We were able to win five tough singles matches today. Overall, I was very impressed with the veteran leadership and experience of this group."
In doubles play, Army saw continued success as Lampman, who was paired with sophomore Michael Nguyen, gutted out a win over a very good Utah State team, 7-6(2). Barnes teamed-up with senior Austin McCasin and was able to earn a win over Idaho State, 6-4. McCormick and junior Grant Riechmann dropped a hard-fought battle to host Boise State's No. two doubles team, 5-7.
Day two of the tournament will begin for the Black Knights at 9 a.m. MT.
