BOISE, IDAHO – The Army West Point men's tennis team carried its first-day success into day two of the Boise State Invite, and as a result the Black Knights have three teams competing in the quarterfinals in the main draw.
Junior Sam Lampman remained perfect through the halfway point of the tournament, taking two more wins in singles play. He started the day by defeating service academy rival Air Force in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, and later defeated Utah State 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 to earn a berth into the quarterfinals. With sophomore Michael Nguyen as his doubles partner, he improved to 2-0, and earned his second quarterfinal berth of the day while improving to a combined record of 5-0 through the halfway point of the tournament.
Junior Kyle Barnes and senior Austin McCasin are also into the doubles main draw quarterfinals after defeating Abilene Christian 7-6(1). McCasin also has a horse in the consolation draw for singles, going 2-0 on the day to stay alive. He started the second day dropping the first set 1-6, but from that point on only conceded six games in the remaining four sets. The Keller, Texas-native, defeated Iowa State 1-6, 6-3, 10-2 and Lewis-Clark State College 6-0, 6-1.
The Black Knights continue their push through the Boise State Invite tomorrow with singles play starting at 9 a.m. MT.
