NIAGARA, N.Y. - Niagara scored the first five goals of the game against the Black Knights and handed the Army hockey team a 6-1 defeat on Saturday night at Dwyer Arena in Atlantic Hockey action.
Army (3-8-2, 3-7-2 AHA) saw Josh Richards net his third goal in the last five games for the lone score for the Black Knights. C.J. Reuschein was given an assist on the play for his first helper of the year. Parker Gahagen got the start in net and was relieved by Cole Bruns at the start of the second period. Gahagen made 10 saves in the first 20 minutes, while Bruns pushed aside 18 in the last 40 of the game.
Niagara (3-9-0, 3-5-0 AHA) has won three-straight games and had a 5-0 lead with five minutes left in the second period. Dan Kolenda and Robert Angiolella each potted two goals, while Isaac Kohls had three points on a goal and three assists. Hug Turccotte recorded two points in the win and Jackson Teichroeb took home both wins this weekend after 27 stops tonight, including 13 in the third period.
Turcotte got the scoring started with this fourth of the season coming three minutes into the game. Kohls and TJ Sarcona had the assists on the goal. Angiolella added to the lead just over three minutes later with the first of two on the night with assists to Stanislav Dzakhov and Matt Dineen. Kolenda closed out the scoring in the first period and gave Niagara a 3-0 lead going into the first intermission.
Kolenda increased the advantage to 4-0 with 8:30 remaining in the middle frame. Isaac Kohls put home his third of the year to give the Purple Eagles their largest lead up to that point, which was with 7:07 left in the second period.
Army was able to get one back with a nice backhander from Richards that hit the back of the net with Reuschlein added the assist with five minutes left in the second period.
Angiolella closed out the scoring with a power play goal coming 3:15 into the third period. Kohls assisted on the play for his third point, while Lawrence Smith recorded his second helper of the season. The rest of the final frame was filled with penalties, but neither team could find the net and the Purple Eagles came away with the 6-1 win.
Niagara was 1-for-5 on the power play, while Army went scoreless on the man advantage with five chances. Niagara earned the 34-28 shot advantage and after tallying 30 or more shots in the first 11 games, the Black Knights were held under 30 for the second-straight night.
The Black Knights continued their road swing with a visit to No. 19 Providence on Tuesday night, followed by a two-game set next weekend at Bentley.
Ice Shavings: The Purple Eagles remain undefeated against the Black Knights at home ... they earned their 14th win in the series ... Richards has four points in his last five games with three goals and an assist.
