SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.- Defender Meghan Hayes scored early in the first half and midfielder Frankie Maier added a second goal just before halftime, and Seton Hall held off Army over the final 45 minutes in making that 2-0 led stand in a non-conference women's soccer match Friday afternoon.
The win is the first of the season for the Pirates (1-1-1), who outshot the Black Knights (1-2-0) 15-6. Five of Army's six shots were on goal, to include back-to-back attempts by Candace Stewart and Ruthie Rosenberger just over 40 seconds apart early in the second half, but keeper Jennifer Pettigrew made both stops in finishing with four along with a team save.
Hayes tallied in close to open the scoring in the 13th minute, then set up Maier with the insurance goal as the midfielder beat Army freshman keeper Jordan Cassalia one-on-one in the 34th minute.
Outshot 10-1 in the first half, Army's first three second half shots were on goal starting with a header by Hanna Rozzi and boots by Stewart and Rosenberger as the Black Knights matched shots (five) with Seton Hall in the second half. Army did not allow the Pirates a shot on goal in the second half. Army led 6-4 in corner kicks with three in each half.
The Black Knights, opening a challenging five-game road slate, will look to snap loose from a two-game losing streak in Sunday's match at Massachusetts
