Lacrosse Hands Out Team Awards At Annual Banquet

WEST POINT, N.Y. The Army men’s lacrosse team handed out its annual team awards, Sunday afternoon, at its annual team banquet, held at the Firstie Club at West Point.
Four players won awards for the second-straight season. Senior goalkeeper Adam Fullerton (Liverpool, N.Y.) was named the Gen. James V. Hartinger Team MVP, while senior attackman Justin Bokmeyer (El Cajon, Calif.) garnered the Lt. Ray Enners/Chris Pettitt Memorial Offensive MVP, senior Jay Larson (Troy, N.Y.) took home the Jack Rust Defensive MVP and senior defenseman Adam Hansinger (Auburn, N.Y.) was named the Jack Emmer “Nutcracker” Award winner as the team’s toughest player.
Several other awards were also handed out. Senior defenseman Craig Massie (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) earned the Parent’s Club Award recognizing the senior with the highest grade point average, while freshman midfielder Rob McCallion (Narberth, Pa.) was named the Gen. L.E. Seeman Award winner as the team’s top freshman.
The Gen. George Ruhlen Most Improved Player honor went to junior attackman Jason Peyer (Williston Park, N.Y.), while senior midfielder Mike Hanna (Massapequa, N.Y.) was honored with the Steve S. Valhakis Unsung Player Award. Senior manager Richard Camacho was recognized with the Gerard F. O’Connor Memorial Award for Cadet Service.
Senior midfielder Roy Ragusa (Massapequa, N.Y.), senior attackman Pat Fullerton (Liverpool, N.Y.), senior attackman J.P. Keneally (St. James, N.Y.) and senior student assistant Erik Haniuk (Brewster, N.Y.) each received the F. Morris Touchstone Coach’s Award for team spirit and personal sacrifice.
A finalist for both the Tewaaraton and Enners awards recognizing the national player of the year, Adam Fullerton was named the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year and a first-team all-conference honoree for the second season in a row. Named the Patriot League Goalie of the Week on five occasions this year, he finished the season ranked fourth nationally in save percentage (.632) and seventh in goals against average (6.86), while leading the conference in both categories. Fullerton registered double-digit saves in 11 games, including a career career-high 24 in a 10-6 loss to top-ranked Duke when Army held the potent Blue Devil offense six goals under their season scoring average. He eclipsed the Academy’s all-time saves record, totaling 610 over the past four seasons.
Bokmeyer, who served as team captain along with Adam Fullerton, scored a team-best 24 goals and tied for the team lead with 33 points. He was named the Patriot League Player of the Week on Feb. 19 after a five-goal, one-assist effort in a season-opening 16-3 win versus VMI, and won it again on Apr. 14 after a three-goal performance in the Black Knights’ 9-6 victory over Navy. Bokmeyer also received the Lt. Ray Enners Memorial Alumni Saber Award that goes to the Black Knight that picks up the most ground balls in the Army-Navy game.
A second-team All-Patriot League selection a season ago and a preseason All-America pick by Inside Lacrosse entering the season, Larson was awarded first-team all-conference honors this year. He was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on March 31 following two solid performances in an 8-7 victor over No. 12 Hoftstra (Mar. 25) and a 13-9 win over Colgate (Mar. 29).
Larson joined Massie, who garnered his second-straight second-team all-conference award, and Hansinger to form the Black Knights’ starting close defense unit. The trio was a big reason why Army ranked fourth nationally in scoring defense with a 7.13 average. Massie is also a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes the top senior in the country for achievement on the field, in the classroom and in community service.
A second-team All-Patriot League selection, Peyer tied for the team scoring lead with 33 points on 23 goals (including three game-winners) and 10 assists. Also credited with a team-best 43 ground balls, Peyer was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week on March 24 after a career-best four-goal performance in a 14-5 victory over Holy Cross (Mar. 22) followed a two-goal showing in a 4-2 win at Lehigh (Mar. 19). He also scored the game-winning goal with two seconds on the clock as the Black Knights shocked then No. 12 Hofstra, 8-7 on March 25.
McCallion was one of the countries top freshmen, tying for the team lead with 33 points, including a Black Knight-best 18 assists. Named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week a conference-best three times during the season, he was the only member of the squad that tallied at least one point in all 15 games. He started the season with a career-best four points on three goals and an assist versus VMI, and also totaled a personal-high three assists against Colgate.
A speedy defensive midfielder, Hanna was a key member of Army’s transition game that was successful on over 80 percent of its clear attempts. Credited with four goals and two assists, none was more memorable than his unassisted end-to-end tally in the Black Knights’ 12-11 victory over Rutgers in Dallas, Texas on March 15.
The Black Knights’ top faceoff specialist, Ragusa won 90 of 180 total faceoffs taken, while adding two goals and an assist during the season. His best performance came in Army’s regular season matchup at Bucknell when he controlled a career-high 11 of 18 draws he lined up for.
Mainly utilized on the team’s man-up unit, Pat Fullerton saw action in 13 games this season, totaling eight points on five goals and three assists. He was credited with two goals and an assist in Army’s 12-4 victory at Lafayette (Apr. 15) after also adding two goals versus Holy Cross.
Keneally was limited to four games during an injury-plagued senior campaign. He scored a goal in the Black Knights’ victory over Holy Cross and also tallied an assist at Lafayette.
Haniuk was a three-year member of the squad before off-season knee surgery forced him to miss his senior campaign. He remained with the team, however, serving as a student assistant during the year.
Camacho served the team’s head manager and was responsible for overseeing the squad’s equipment and uniform duties.
Army, which finished the season ranked No. 19 in the final USILA Coaches Poll, compiled a 9-6 record and won its first Patriot League regular season title with a 5-1 record. The Black Knights played six of the 14 teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament, finishing with a 3-3 record against those teams.
