Ryan Hershberger enters his third season with Army West Point track and field after joining the program in 2021. He serves as an assistant coach, working with the throws group.
Under Hershberger's guidance, Army throwers have set new standards for success. Notably, at the Patriot League Championships, throwers have secured an impressive 16 conference titles, including a remarkable sweep of all four women's throwing events at the 2023 Patriot League Outdoor Meet—a feat previously unheard of in the Patriot League. Moreover, the team's throwers have qualified an impressive 20 entries for the NCAA East Preliminary Round. In 2022, Emily Mikoud and Jamir Gibson qualified for the NCAA Division I Championships in the hammer throw and discus throw, respectively. Mikoud's qualification marked the first time that a member of the Army women's track and field program competed at the NCAA Division I Championships since Diana Wills in 1990. Additionally, after the 2022 NCAA season, Emily Fink went on to become the USATF U20 champion in the women's hammer throw, earning her a spot at the World U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia, where she finished 15th.
Prior to arriving at West Point, Hershberger served as an assistant track and field coach for the throwing events at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. During Hershberger’s tenure at UNC Charlotte, the Forty-Niner throwers won a total of seven Conference-USA titles in the throwing events while setting school records in the men’s shot put, women’s hammer throw, and men’s discus throw. During the 2021 season, Hershberger guided senior thrower Terrell Adams to an NCAA Championship berth in the discus throw, where he finished eighth, garnering first-team All-American honors.
A native of Clay Center, Kansas, Hershberger graduated with degrees in mathematics and computer science from Kansas State University, where he was an All-Big 12 and NCAA All-American shot putter with a lifetime best of 19.29m (63’3”). He holds USATF Level II coaching certifications in both the throws and jumps, as well as a throwing event specialist certification and a strength and conditioning coach certification from the USTFCCCA.
