Zak Boisvert enters his fifth year with the program after arriving at Army West Point in October 2016.
Since joining the program, Boisvert has helped Army experience tremendous success against service academy rivals Navy and Air Force. The Black Knights are 5-3 against the Midshipmen and 3-1 opposite the Falcons since Boisvert joined the program as an assistant coach. With Boisvert on the staff, the Class of 2020 graduated with the most wins opposite Navy in program history. In the 2019-20 edition of the annual Army-Navy Star Series game, the Cadets secured the Star Trophy and completed the sweep of Navy during the regular season for the first time since the 2011-12 campaign. In the 86-75 overtime victory versus the Mids on Feb. 22, 2020, Army scored the third-most points in a game against Navy in 133 all-time meetings.
In the first meeting of the season opposite the Mids on Jan. 25, Army left Annapolis, Md., with a 73-66 win. The 73 points were the most scored by the Cadets at Alumni Hall since Feb. 20, 2016.
For the third time in four seasons, the 2019-20 Black Knights led the Patriot League in assists per game, a mark that ranked them 12th in Division I . Army also sat atop the Patriot League rankings for Field Goal Percentage at 47.1% and their 2-Point Percentage mark was good enough for 12th nationally.
Boisvert was key in the development of Tommy Funk, one of the best point guards to play for Army in the program’s rich history. Funk turned in a standout senior season in which he finished first on the team and third in the league in scoring with a career-best 17.5 points per game en route to being named First Team All-Patriot League, National Basketball Coaches Association (NABC) Third Team and Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Third Team All-Met. He additionally set career-high marks with 4.4 rebounds and 7.1 assists per tilt.
Boisvert helped Funk cap a historic career by shattering the Army and Patriot League record for career assists with 728, while also breaking Army’s single-season assists mark, which he previously set as a junior. Funk was a four-time Patriot League Player of the Week as a senior and received U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) National Player of the Week recognition, the first by a Patriot League player since Mike Muscala of Bucknell did it during the 2010-11 season.
Funk played in all 124 career games and ranked eighth in program history in career points, first in career assists, first in single-season assists, seventh in steals and 10th in 3-pointers made.
Since arriving on the banks of the Hudson, Boisvert has been a part of several notable program wins, including the 89-76 road victory over the two-time defending MAC regular season and tournament champs, Buffalo, on Dec. 14.
On Dec. 8, 2018, he helped coach the Black Knights to a thrilling, 66-61, comeback win in Colorado Springs after the team trailed by 17 at the half to the Falcons. This win marked the program’s fifth consecutive win over Air Force.
During the 2017-18 campaign, he aided the Black Knights in taking down service-academy rival Navy in Annapolis, Md., on Jan. 14, which marked the third consecutive year that Army left Alumni Hall victorious.
He helped lead Army to one of its most impressive wins in Army-Navy Game history on Feb. 18, 2017, when the Black Knights erased a 25-point deficit in the final 13 minutes of play to capture a 71-68 victory in Annapolis, Md. The historic win tied the largest comeback in NCAA Division I play that year, as well as being the largest comeback in Army-Navy men’s basketball history.
In 2016-17, Boisvert helped instruct Funk to Patriot League All-Rookie team accolades. The Warrington, Pa., native became Army’s eighth cadet-athlete selected to the all-rookie team in the last 10 years and first since the 2013-14 season. Funk started in every game for the Cadets, averaging 9.1 points, 4.8 assists, 3.0 rebounds per game. Another highlight of Boisvert’s first season was Funk and Jordan Fox each averaging over 4.5 assists per game. It made the Black Knights one of only three teams in Division I basketball to have two players accomplish that feat.
Boisvert, a Portland, Maine, native, arrived at West Point after two years at University of Maine.
While at Maine, Boisvert saw the Black Bears win total jump from three in his first season to eight wins in his second. The Black Bears' resurgence was aided by an impressive batch of young talent with freshmen and sophomores accounting for 69% of the Black Bears' scoring (including the team's top four scorers) during the 2015-16 season. Maine had back-to-back America East All-Rookie team members (Kevin Little in 2014-15 and Issac Vann in 2015-16). Prior to the 2015-16 season, Boisvert was tabbed by Maine head coach Bob Walsh as the program's "Offensive Coordinator." The Black Bears quickly upped the pace, raising their scoring average from 60.4 points per game to 76.6. The 16.2 increase in points per game marked the largest season-to-season scoring jump in Division I between the two seasons.
Prior to Maine, Boisvert gathered three years of collegiate coaching experience at Iona and Fairleigh Dickinson.
As a member of the Knights, Boisvert helped FDU to its first conference tournament appearance in four years. Fairleigh Dickinson won six conference games during Boisvert's lone season in Teaneck, matching the program's total from the previous three years combined.
During his time at Iona, Boisvert assisted in leading the Gaels to a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championship and a trip to the 2013 NCAA Tournament, where Iona bowed out to Ohio State in the second round.
Throughout his career, Boisvert has developed a reputation as a fantastic all-around teacher of the game, but his work with point guards has been particularly impressive. Boisvert's first season at Iona saw Scott Machado, the Gaels' floor general, post career highs in points (13.2 per game), field goal percentage (41%) and assists (7.6 per game). Machado would go on to play for three NBA teams (Houston Rockets, Golden State Warriors and Utah Jazz). During Boisvert's second season in New Rochelle, Lamont "MoMo" Jones won the PepsiMax MAAC Player of the Year award and finished as the third leading scorer in the NCAA with a 22.6 per-game average.
At FDU, Boisvert helped senior point guard Sidney Sanders raise his scoring average from 4.6 the season prior to Boisvert's arrival to 19.1, the second largest jump in the NCAA that season. Sanders was elected to the All-NEC First Team for his improved play.
Prior to his coaching assignments, Boisvert worked as the Team Events Director for the Hoop Group organization, a basketball instruction company based in Neptune, New Jersey. Working with the nation's premier AAU basketball clubs, Boisvert organized the Under Armour Championship Series events in both Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
"I have been lucky and fortunate to work with a number of really hard-working, passionate basketball people at the Hoop Group but none has worked harder and with more passion than Zak," Hoop Group President Rob Kennedy said. "He is a relentless recruiter and a tremendous student of the game."
Boisvert attended Fordham, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in English in 2010.
