Jarren Dyson joined the Army West Point Men’s Basketball coaching staff in June 2023, and was promoted to associate head coach in August of 2025.
In his second season as an assistant coach, Dyson helped coach Army to a 17-16 overall and a 10-8 record in Patriot League play.
The 10-8 finish in Patriot League play tied for the program's best finish in League play in program history. The Black Knights were also the only team in the Patriot League that season to earn a win over a Group of Five school, defeating the UTSA Roadrunners (American Conference), 78-75.
Dyson helped coach two Patriot League All-League honorees. Jalen Rucker, who was named to the First Team, and Josh Scovens, who named to the Second Team. Jalen Rucker also earned All-American honors, being named on the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I North Atlantic All-District First Team, the only player in the Patriot League to receive those honors.
He also helped the 2024-25 squad receive a postseason invite to the Purple College Basketball Invitational (CBI). Then, in the opening round of play, the Black Knights shocked Elon University, defeating the Phoenix, 83-78, breaking the program's 55-year postseason tournament win drought.
In his first season alongside head coach Kevin Kuwik, the Black Knights finished the season with 10 wins, highlighted by a signature win of the team defeating Navy, capturing the star, as a part of the Army-Navy Star Series in dramatic fashion for the first time since 2020.
He also coached two of Army’s main contributors who were freshman, Josh Scovens and Ryan Curry. Scovens would go on and win the Patriot League’s Rookie of The Year award, while both Scovens and Curry were named on the Patriot League All-Rookie Team.
Previous Experience in Patriot League
Prior to West Point, he spent five years at Lafayette College where he helped lead Lafayette to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in 20 years.
The Leopards won the 2020-2021 Patriot League Central Division Championship. Serving as the Recruiting Coordinator, he helped recruit and develop three Patriot League All Rookie selections, a Patriot League Rookie of the Year and five All Patriot League Selections.
Dyson was involved in player development with perimeter players and with student-athlete academics. He was also tasked with managing administrative duties and the day-to-day operations of the program. He also served as program director for Lafayette's Elite Camp for two seasons.
Championship Pedigree
In two separate stints, he spent a total of five years at Christopher Newport University, where he was the Associate Head Coach and helped guide CNU to the 2023 Division III National Championship for the first time in program history.
Dyson helped guide the Captians to two Final Fours (2016, 2023), three Sweet 16s, and four Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships with an overall record of 129-22.
He was the recruiting coordinator, recruited 10 All-Conference players, two Rookies of the Year, three Conference Players of the Year, and two First Team All-Americans.
Dyson’s Beginnings
Prior to his time with the Captains, Dyson was an assistant at his high school alma mater, Tabb High School, for two years, leading the Tigers to the state quarterfinals both years.
As a student-athlete at Emory & Henry, Dyson started all four years, serving as a team captain for his final two seasons. He remains fourth all-time in assists at his alma mater and was selected as the team's Most Valuable Player following the 2009-10 season.
Dyson earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 2010, majoring in Sport Management with a minor in Business Management at Emory & Henry.
A native of Yorktown, N.Y., Dyson was a standout member of the Tabb High School basketball team. During his time with the Tigers, he earned Second Team All-State honors after leading Tabb to a state quarterfinal berth in 2006.
