David Belfield joined the Army West Point men's basketball coaching staff as an assistant in November 2019 and enters his fourth season with the program.
Since Belfield joined the West Point coaching staff under Lee Anderson Head Men’s Basketball Coach Jimmy Allen, he has been a part of a staff that has finished .500 or better in three-straight years of Patriot League play for the first time in school history.
Belfield works primarily with the wings and is the team’s recruiting coordinator.
In 2021-22, Belfield continued to work with the team’s defense. Senior guard Josh Caldwell was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season. Caldwell is only the third Patriot League player to receive the award in consecutive seasons. Sophomore guard Jalen Rucker earned Patriot League Second-Team honors and was the only underclassman to be named all-conference.
During 2020-21, Belfield took on a greater role in developing the team's defense. Under Belfield's guidance, the Black Knights held opponents to 69.5 points per game, the lowest since the team's effort in 2012-13 (68.1).
In his three seasons with the team, he helped the Black Knights reach several program milestones. Army compiled 10 Patriot League victories to tie the program record for single-season league wins in 19-20. Which marked just the second time in program history that an Army squad collected double-digit league wins and the first since the 2013-14 campaign. Army has also collected 26 Patriot League wins, the most in school history over a 3-year span.
In his first year, he also helped the Black Knights secure a notable, 89-76, road win over the two-time defending MAC regular season and tournament champs, Buffalo, on Dec. 14.
Belfield comes to the banks of the Hudson following a one-year stint as a graduate assistant coach at Charlotte. While a member of the 49ers staff, he saw the team complete a 24-point second-half deficit to top Big 12 opponent Oklahoma State, 66-64. With Charlotte, his duties included creating opponent scouting reports and videos, overseeing a staff of 10 student managers, and also helping with recruiting efforts.
Prior to his time at Charlotte, Belfield spent two years as an assistant coach at his alma mater, USC Aiken, from 2016-18. During his two years on the staff, the Pacers played to a 34-21 mark. The 2016-17 team posted an 18-win season, which was a 12-game turnaround for the program after going 6-20 the previous year. Belfield worked with five all-conference players while with the program. He also helped coach the Pacers to the second round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament during the 2017-18 season.
From 2014-16, Belfield played for USC Aiken. He was team captain during the 2014-15 season and was a member of the Peach Belt Conference All-Academic team in 2016.
Belfield got his start coaching in the AAU ranks with PSB Elite in Charlotte, NC. He spent his college summers coaching AAU, and working basketball camps at different colleges and universities. In the 2013-14 season, he was an assistant boys' varsity coach at Huntersville, North Carolina's Christ the King High School.
Belfield graduated from USC Aiken with a Bachelor's degree in Communication in 2018. His mother and sister both work in education, while his father is a retired law enforcement officer. He additionally has a brother who is a New York City attorney. In his spare time, Belfield enjoys working out and spending time with friends and family.
