Holt concluded his tenure at Western Carolina as associate head coach, offensive coordinator, and offensive line coach. During that time, he coached First-Team All-Southern Conference running back Donovan Spencer, who finished his career with 2,079 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns.
At Appalachian State, Holt coached tight ends, served as special teams coordinator, and was director of camps and clinics. He was part of three conference championships and four NCAA Playoff appearances.
As a player, Holt was a member of three national championship teams at Appalachian State. The Mountaineers won 44 of the 56 games in which Holt appeared. He was voted a team captain and earned Sports Network All-America and All-Southern Conference honors.
