Softball Claims Series Sweep At Holy Cross in Regular Season Finale
May 03, 2026 | Softball
WORCESTER, Mass. — Army West Point softball (32-23, 12-6) completed its regular season slate on Sunday, earning a dominant run-rule win over the Holy Cross Crusaders (10-34, 4-14) 11-1.
With the win, the Black Knights earn their second Patriot League series sweep this season, with the Black Knights also sweeping Lehigh. Army has now won 11 of the last 12 matchups against Holy Cross, winning every single series against the Crusaders through head coach Jen Consaul's tenure.
Army exploded early and never looked back, using a dominant eight-run first inning and strong pitching to roll past Holy Cross in the run-rule win.
Seniors Taylor Brown and Caitlyn Newburn led the offense, with Brown earning a team-high two hits plus two RBIs and Newburn adding one hit, a home run, to finish the day with a team-high three RBIs.
Tayten Moore added a team-high two runs, adding one hit and reaching base twice on walks. Ashton White, Sienna Tepley and Mia Bonsignore also added one hit and one RBI each. Breanna Coonfare and Samantha Sims also added hits, and Hannah Laub also drew two walks to reach and score one run.
In the circle, Breanna Izzo received the start and earned her 12th win of the season after pitching 4.0 innings. She finished the day allowing only two hits, one earned run and one walk, finishing with a game-high seven strikeouts. Kendall Holloway pitched one inning in relief, earning two strikeouts to help shut the door.
How It Happened
Army set the tone immediately in the top of the first with an eight-run inning fueled by aggressive offense and timely power.
Tayten Moore and Taylor Brown opened the game with back-to-back hits to put pressure on the defense. Ashton White followed with an RBI single to get Army on the board before Caitlyn Newburn delivered the biggest swing of the inning, a three-run home run to center field, to quickly make it 4–0.
Army continued to pile on. Walks loaded the bases, and RBI opportunities followed as Mia Bonsignore was hit by a pitch to force in a run, and Sienna Tepley drew another bases-loaded walk to extend the lead.
Heads-up baserunning and a throwing error brought in another run, and Brown capped the inning with an RBI groundout as Army scored eight runs on five hits, taking full control at 8–0.
In the circle, Breanna Izzo settled in after allowing a run in the bottom of the first, responding with multiple strikeouts and efficient innings to limit Holy Cross offensively. She kept hitters off balance and allowed Army's offense to maintain momentum.
Army added on in the third inning. Samantha Sims sparked the rally with a single and aggressive baserunning, eventually scoring on a defensive sequence to make it 9–1. Later in the inning, Brown came through again with an RBI double to plate another run, extending the lead to 10–1.
The Black Knights continued to apply pressure in the fourth. After two runners reached, a defensive miscue allowed another run to score, pushing the advantage to 11–1.
Kendall Holloway entered in relief and was dominant, delivering a clean outing highlighted by two strikeouts in the fifth inning, shutting down any chance of a comeback from Holy Cross and helping Army clinch its 32nd win of the season.
