Baseball Walks-Off Lafayette for Senior Day Sweep
April 26, 2026 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point baseball had one game in the bag on Sunday.
Â
But it had to rally to take the second game of its doubleheader vs. the Lafayette Leopards at Doubleday Field.Â
Â
And yet, despite an early 3-0 hole and a deficit as large as 8-4 after four innings, the Black Knights (24-17, 14-8 PL) celebrated their seven seniors in style, with a walk-off wild pitch to score Chris Barr in the ninth inning, giving Army a 10-9 win in the twin bill nightcap.
Â
Army—having taken the early game Sunday, 6-3—has now won eight of its past 10 in league play.
Â
Josiah Overbeek hit a home run and picked up the save in game one, before pitching once more in the second matchup and earning the win in relief.Â
Â
Army's walk-off came after Chris Barr drew a four-pitch walk in the ninth and William Parker was hit by a pitch. Then, after a Carter Hewitt groundout allowed Barr to advance 90 feet away from home, the senior from Sarasota, Fla. read a wild pitch on the second pitch of the game's ultimate plate appearance, crossing the plate for the win.
Â
Game One
Â
Army got a pair of three-run innings offensively to jump out ahead of the Leopards in Saturday's opening contest, holding on to win 6-3.
Â
Overbeek recorded both a three-run homer and his fifth save of the season.
Â
That three-run home run came in the bottom of the second to get Army on the board first, after Paul Andrzejewski reached on a single and David Dubrule walked, each with two outs.
Â
The Black Knights doubled their lead an inning later, with a Zac Farrell sacrifice fly and a two-run double from Dubrule down the right field line.
Â
Starting pitcher Andrew Berg earned the win to move to 6-2 on the season, striking out six over the seven-inning contest. He allowed a run in the fourth inning, stranded a pair of runners in the fifth and induced a double play in the sixth to keep the lead at 6-1.
Â
After Lafayette scored twice in the seventh and with two outs in the inning—including a high-leverage pickoff at first base—Overbeek entered in relief with the tying run at the plate but needed just one pitch to record the final out, a flyout to center field.
Â
Game Two
Â
Army didn't lead for a single pitch in Sunday's nightcap.
Â
And it didn't matter in determining a winner.Â
Â
Trailing by 3-0, 5-3, 8-4 and 9-6 margins, the Black Knights rallied after each deficit until Barr was surrounded by celebrating teammates in the ninth.
Â
After giving up a run in the first and another two in the second, Addison Ainsworth got Army on the board in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly before Overbeek recorded an opposite-field RBI single, with Farrell tying the game later in the frame on a wild pitch.
Â
After the Leopards went back in front with a two-run third, Hewitt hit his second homer of the season in the home half of the stanza, a solo homer.
Â
Facing a four-run hole in the fifth, Hewitt recorded consecutive RBIs in the fifth and sixth innings. He logged a single through the left side to bring home Barr in the fifth, before once again driving in a run an inning later with a bases-loaded hit by pitch taken.
Â
A solo home run restored a three-run lead for Lafayette in the seventh, before Mason Scott answered with a solo home run of his own in the bottom of the inning; his first career home run. Army would then tie the game in the eighth, when with two outs and the bases loaded, Farrell singled to left field to score both Parker and pinch-runner JT Craig.
Â
Army's heroics in the ninth came in large part due to an unsung effort from the home bullpen, who combined for 5.1 innings and allowed just one run. After starting pitcher Trey Ates exited the contest after tossing 3.2 frames, Jakob Vanderhave threw a pair of scoreless innings before turning it over to Mark Abell, who allowed just a solo home run over 2.2 frames. Then, with two Lafayette runners on base in the top of the ninth, Overbeek came on to record the final two outs of the inning and set up Army's walk-off.
