Softball Opens Patriot League Play, Splits Doubleheader Against Lafayette
March 29, 2026 | Softball
WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army West Point softball (13-18, 1-1) began its Patriot League slate on Sunday, hosting the Lafayette College Leopards (8-23, 1-4) inside the Army Softball Complex, splitting the day with a 6-0 win and a 0-1 loss.
The Black Knights opened the day with a dominant 6–0 victory over Lafayette, powered by an explosive offensive start and a historic performance in the circle from Breanna Izzo, who threw a complete-game no-hitter.
With the no-hitter, Breanna Izzo made history, with the performance marking her third complete game no-hitter of the season and her career, surpassing Renee Poirier, who had two in 2017, to hold the most no-hitters in a single season and career in Army softball's program history. She also added six strikeouts and only allowed two on with a walk and a hit by pitch.
In game two, Army fell in a tightly contested 1–0 loss to Lafayette, with the game defined by strong pitching, missed opportunities and a single unearned run.
Amanda Eaglin earned the start in game two, throwing a complete game only allowing two hits, one unearned run and three walks. She also added four strikeouts in the loss.
Offensively, Ashton White led the Black Knights with four hits on the day with one RBI, going 3-4 in Army's first game against the Leopards. Caitlyn Newburn and Hannah Laub each added three hits while hitting a team-high .600 on the day. Emma Murchsion added two hits, plus Sienna Tepley, Samantha Sims, Makaila Moosbrugger and Mia Bonsignore each added one.
Sienna Tepley earned a team-high two RBIs, while White, Moosebrugger, Murchison and Bonsignore each added one RBI.
GAME 1
From the opening inning, Izzo set the tone. She retired Lafayette in order in the first, including a strikeout to end the frame, and never allowed a hit throughout the game.
Despite a hit batter and a free pass early, Izzo remained in control, working efficiently and recording key strikeouts in the second, fifth, and sixth innings to shut down any potential threats.
Offensively, Army wasted no time backing her up. In the bottom of the first, the Black Knights strung together quality at-bats to take a 3–0 lead.
After Taylor Brown worked a walk and moved into scoring position, Ashton White delivered an RBI single to left center.
Moments later, Emma Murchison added another RBI single, and Mia Bonsignore capped the inning with an RBI single of her own, showcasing Army's ability to string together hits and capitalize with runners on base.
Army added on in the third inning with aggressive baserunning and pressure offense.
Samantha Sims singled and stole second, and both she and Hannah Laub came around to score on a misplayed ball off the bat of Sienna Tepley, extending the lead to 5–0.
The Black Knights continued to apply pressure at the plate throughout the game. Ashton White collected multiple hits, including a double and a single, while Newburn, Murchison, Laub, and Bonsignore all contributed to a balanced offensive effort.
In the sixth inning, Army added its final run when Makaila Moosbrugger delivered an RBI single after a string of hits loaded the bases, pushing the lead to 6–0.
Meanwhile, Izzo remained dominant to the very end. She closed out the seventh inning with three straight groundouts, completing the no-hitter and sealing the shutout victory.
GAME 2
Amanda Eaglin was outstanding in the circle, pitching a complete game and keeping Army within reach throughout.
She worked out of early trouble in the first inning, escaping a bases-loaded situation with two clutch strikeouts, including a looking strikeout to end the threat and keep the game scoreless.
Eaglin continued to command the zone all game, mixing pitches effectively and generating timely strikeouts and weak contact, including a clean stretch from the third through fifth innings where Lafayette was held in check.
Offensively, Army generated chances but struggled to break through. Caitlyn Newburn and Ashton White each recorded singles early, while Hannah Laub added a key hit in the fifth inning to spark another opportunity. The Black Knights consistently put runners on base but could not find the timely hit to push a run across.
The game's only run came in the sixth inning. Lafayette used a leadoff single and capitalized off Army's errors to execute small ball to move runners into scoring position before a sacrifice fly brought home an unearned run, giving the Leopards a 1–0 lead.
Army had one final chance in the seventh. Newburn led off with a single, and a walk to Laub put the tying run on base. However, a double play and a strikeout ended the threat, sealing the narrow loss.
Despite the result, Eaglin's performance stood out, as she pitched a complete game, limited damage, and only allowed two hits and one run.
