Baseball Dispatches Saint Peter’s Tuesday

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point may have fallen behind in the opening inning but quickly took the lead for good in the bottom of the first, on its way to a 9-4 win over the Saint Peter's Peacocks on Tuesday at Doubleday Field.
The Black Knights (12-10) have now won five games in a row and six of their past seven.
William Parker and Josiah Overbeek hoisted home runs as Army raced out to a 7-2 lead after the third inning.
Seven relief pitchers also received an appearance, with starters Mark Abell and bullpen hand Walker Calvo each providing two innings pitched the remaining arms pitching one frame each.
Joe Vaccarella pitched a shutout third inning and picked up the win, his first career decision. Max Donecea, William Leahy and Michael Delph provided scoreless fourth, seventh and eighth innings respectively before Anthony Ramiriez closed the game in the ninth.
After the Peacocks plated two runs in the top of the first, Parker answered with a two-run homer in the home half of the inning to make it 2-2. John McKillop followed with an RBI single to give Army a lead that stood through the remainder of the game, and Mason Scott plated the fourth run of the inning on a bases loaded RBI hit by pitch.
In the second, Parker barely missed his second homer of the day, instead collecting a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2 before McKillop recorded his second two-out RBI single of the day to give Army a four-run lead.
Army got back on the scoreboard in the seventh on a JT Craig squeeze bunt to bring in Zac Farrell from third before Overbeek's solo home run in the eighth.
The Peacocks got two runs back in the top of the ninth, before Farrell corralled the 27th out an at bat later.
By the Numbers
3: Overbeek crossed the plate three times Tuesday, going 1-for-2 at the plate with a pair of walks drawn.
3-for-3: Parker was 3-for-3 in the win.
2-for-4: McKillop was 2-for-4 with two RBIs in his first start since March 14.
5: Abell recorded a season-high five strikeouts, which also tied a career-high. Five of his six outs recorded were each strikeouts, including each of his first five.

Abell's pitching start was the first of his career, having come into the day with 26 career relief appearances as well as 23 hitting starts.
Army sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first, the seventh time this season nine or more men batted in a frame for Army.
Overbeek has reached base in all 20 games he has played this season.
Scott made his second career start at third base.
Craig came off the bench to play center field and recorded Army's second successful squeeze play of the season.
Max McGlone pinch hit for Army in the eighth before Carter Hewitt played first in the ninth.

The Black Knights now look ahead to a three-game series next weekend at home vs. Navy as part of the Star Series presented by USAA. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. in Friday's series-opener.
