Wrestling Dispatched Friday Night at No. 21 Cornell
January 16, 2026 | Wrestling
ITHACA, N.Y. – Army West Point Wrestling took the opening bout at perennial wrestling power Cornell on Friday night at Friedman Wrestling Center, but never regained its opening team score lead in Ithaca, falling 25-13 in the dual.
Â
The Black Knights took four of the individual matches on Military Appreciation Night at Cornell, which also served as a homecoming for Class of 1972 Head Men's Wrestling Coach Troy Nickerson, a 2010 Cornell graduate who won the 2009 NCAA Championship with the Big Red at 125 lbs.
Â
For the Big Red, a five-match span at the middleweights provided them four bonus point wins, proving too much for Army to overcome. Army is still seeking its first dual win of 2025-26, having faced ranked opponents in each of its opening four dual meets this season.Â
Â
In the opening bout, Charlie Farmer earned a major decision at 125 lbs, pulling away with an early third period takedown and never looking back on his way to a 14-4 win over late lineup insertee Joe Sciarrone.Â
Â
Next, Ethan Berginc and Cornell's Tyler Ferrara battled in a thrilling 133 lb bout as the Black Knights looked to extend their early lead. Berginc took the match to sudden victory and beyond, but was defeated 3-2 by riding time tiebreaker.Â
Â
Facing the No. 8 wrestler in the country at 141 lbs, Conor Collins faced a multi-takedown deficit heading into the final two minutes, but rode out Vince Cornella for the entire third period. While Collins was unable to trim the margin, he was able to hold Cornella to a 9-4 decision to concede just three team points.
Â
One bout later, No. 2 Jaxon Joy awaited Ryan Franco at 149 lbs, with the Big Red wrestler making concise work over Franco, notching a technical fall at the 5:14 mark.Â
Â
Then, for the third consecutive bout, a top ten wrestler from Cornell awaited Army at 157 lbs, with the home team sending out No. 7 Meyer Shapiro to face Joseph Antonio right before intermission. Antonio looked to have a brief window with a reversal late in the first period, but the match was otherwise controlled by Shapiro, who gave Cornell its second straight technical fall.
Â
Coming out of halftime, No. 17 Gunner Filipowicz saw himself in a low-scoring battle with Cornell's Louis Cerchio at 165 lbs but rode his opponent out for the entire second period and executed a quick escape in the third, holding off a late Cerchio rally to win 2-0 on riding time.Â
Â
Cornell's fourth top 10 wrestler of the night featured at 174 lbs, with No. 2 Simon Ruiz facing Army's Cooper Haase. And for the third time Friday, the Big Red collected a technical fall, with Ruiz prevailed 20-4 over Haase in the third period.Â
Â
The second period of the 184 lb match saw No. 20 Chrisian Hansen claim a pair of takedowns, as he pulled away from Dave Barrett by major decision, 13-3.Â
Â
Following for Army at 197 lbs was No. 30 Wolfgang Frable, who was effective on defense and claimed a second period takedown to defeat Aiden Hanning by shutout decision, 4-0.
Â
Finally at heavyweight, Brady Colbert secured a middle period takedown, only allowing two escape points on his way to a 4-2 win over Cash Henderson.
