May 11, 2025 | Softball
WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army West Point Softball (35-22, 16-2) saw its championship dreams cut short on Sunday, falling to the now three-time reigning Patriot League Tournament Champion, the Boston University Terriers (39-17 14-4), 3-2.
The Black Knights got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but a three-run fifth inning from the Terriers, fueled by two Black Knight errors, ultimately caused Army to fall short on Championship Sunday.
Taylor Brown led the way for the Black Knights offensively with two hits and two RBIs, one of her hits being a two-run home run to help Army gain its initial lead that it held for five innings. Ashton White, Annie Christiana and Emma Murchison all added two hits each.
Breanna Izzo received the start for Army, finishing the game allowing three runs, two of them earned, and two hits while having two strikeouts. Katelyn Flanders entered the game as relief, pitching 1.2 innings, only allowing one hit and one walk.
Izzo ultimately received the loss for the Black Knights.
How It Happened
The Black Knights came out blazing at the top of the first inning, scoring two runs off of three hits, taking an early 2-0 lead.
Annie Christiana started the first inning with a single to left field on the first pitch. Then Taylor Brown stepped up to the plate and, with a full count, hit a home run to right field, making it a two RBI shot to make it a 2-0 game.
Caitlyn Newburn would get on later in the inning with a walk, and Emma Murchison would also hit a single, but the side was retired.
At the bottom of the first, the Terriers would earn one hit off Breanna Izzo, but the Black Knights' defense kept Boston U scoreless.
The second inning called for Annie Christiana to gain her second hit of the day with a two-out single to the shortstop, but she was left stranded.
In the bottom of the second, Boston U drew one walk off Izzo, but the junior threw two strikeouts and one ground out, keeping Army's lead at 2-0.
In the third inning, Ashton White led off the inning with a single, while Emma Murchison added her second hit of the day, but no runs were scored. Army forced BU to go three-and-out, keeping its 2-0 lead.
Taylor Brown was able to reach base in the fourth inning on an error from the BU defense, but the Black Knights still did not add another run. The Terriers drew a walk in the bottom of the fourth, but were still left scoreless.
Ashton White led off the fifth with a single to left field, but three consecutive putouts forced by the Terriers sent the game to the bottom of the inning.
It was the bottom of the inning where the Terriers made their move, scoring three runs off of two hits and two errors by the Black Knights' defense to allow them to close the gap and take a 3-2 lead.
The Black Knights went three and out in the top of the sixth, with the Terriers drawing another walk, but ultimately, Army was able to hold off Boston U and only face a one-run deficit heading into the top of the seventh.
Taylor Brown, the game-tying run, was ultimately able to get on base with a one-out single. Ashton White hit into a fielder's choice, giving Caitlyn Newburn one final out to work with. Ultimately, the junior flew out into right field, ending the Black Knights' season.
