Softball Sees Six-Inning Run-Rule Loss Against Boston U

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army West Point Softball (34-21, 16-2) fell in Game Three of the Patriot League Championship to the Boston University Terriers (37-17, 14-4).
Despite the loss, the Black Knights will have a chance to battle back for a spot on Championship Sunday, opponent pending the winner of Game Four between Lehigh and Bucknell.
Ultimately, errors haunted the Black Knights, with Army committing three errors, allowing Boston U to score five unearned runs to help fuel their six-inning 8-0 victory.
Ashton White and Leila Hurst led the Army battery with two hits, with White earning the first extra base for Army in the tournament with a double. Taylor Brown and Emma Murchison also added a hit.
As for the pitching unit, Katelyn Flanders received the start and pitched for 3.2 innings, allowing four hits and one earned run. Breanna Izzo came in for relief, pitched 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs. Flanders ultimately was credited with the loss.
How It Happened
In the first inning, both teams earned one hit, with Ashton White earning her first hit of the day with a single to right field, but neither team capitalized, keeping the game at 0-0 heading to the second inning.
The Black Knights forced a trio of groundouts in the top of the second inning, forcing the Terriers to go three and out. Meanwhile, Emma Murchison added the Black Knights' second hit of the day, a two-out single down the left field line, but the side was retired, sending the game to the third inning.
The Terriers earned their first run of the day in the top of the third inning, scoring one run off of two hits and one error to take a 1-0 lead. The Black Knights went three-and-out in the third, sending the game to the fourth inning.
In the fourth inning, the Terriers distanced themselves from the Black Knights, scoring three runs off one hit and another Army error, including a two-run home run to take a 4-0 lead over the Black Knights. Breanna Izzo then entered to replace Flanders, then the Black Knights retired the inning.
Army earned two hits in the bottom of the fourth inning, Ashton White getting her second hit of the day with a double and Leila Hurst getting on base with a single, but both were left stranded as Boston U held on to its lead.
Boston U would score for the third consecutive inning in the top of the fifth inning, making it a 6-0 deficit for Army. The Terriers scored two runs off two hits, as well as another error from the Black Knights' defense.
Meanwhile, the Army offense faced its second three-and-out of the day, with BU still holding a 6-0 lead into the sixth inning.
At the top of the sixth inning, the Black Knights started the inning earning two outs, one line out, and one strikeout from Izzo. Then the Terriers drew two walks, then added a two RBI double, allowing BU to take an 8-0 lead, with Army needing to score to avoid the run rule.
Taylor Brown led the bottom of the sixth with a lead-off single, then Leila Hurst added another single to advance Brown into scoring position. But the two were ultimately left stranded, causing Army to be run ruled in six innings.

Up next, the Black Knights play a win-or-go-home matchup in Game Five of the Patriot League Championship, playing the winner of Game Four featuring Lehigh and Bucknell.
First pitch for the elimination game and for a spot on Championship Sunday will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 4, with the game also streaming live on ESPN+.
