April 05, 2025 | Women's Track and Field
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Army West Point Women's Track and Field battled in their Star Meet match against Navy, but ultimately fell 96-107.
The Black Knights claimed seven of 19 event victories, outscoring Navy in four field events and three events on the track.
The meet opened with a statement from Emily Fink, who won the hammer throw with a huge first-round mark of 65.89m (216' 1"). Fink's mark. The mark broke a Star Meet and facility record. The previous record for the Star Meet was 61.89m (Abigail Green, 2021) and the previous faculty record was 63.60m, thrown by Fink herself in 2022.
Emily Fink later matched her own school record in the shot put with a winning mark of 15.75m (51' 8.25"), leading a 1-2-3 sweep alongside Jordan Hecht, who threw a 15.68m mark, and Sara Sahadi who threw a 14.81m mark.
Senior captain Sophia Dykstra added to the field dominance, closing out her Star Meet career with a win in the discus at 48.53m (159' 2"). Olivia Hancock also finished third in the event with a 45.64m throw.
The long jump also saw another winner for Army, with Kalliauna Powers breaking through for first in the event. Her winning jump of 6.01m (19' 8.75") marked not only a personal best but also a new Star Meet and Army program record, surpassing a mark that had stood since 1986.
Olivia Reed also made it a 1-2 finish in the event, leaping a personal-best 5.82m (19' 1.25").
On the track, the team closed out the meet on a high note with a powerful win in the 4x400m relay. The quartet of Hannah Andrews, Ever Elegon, Faith Kibbe, and Skye Chambers delivered a 3:45.65 time.
Mikayla Cheney delivered two of the most impressive performances of the day, winning both the 1500m and 800m.
Her 4:19.77 in the 1500m was a Star Meet record and the second-fastest time of her career. Right behind her was Charlotte Richman, who shattered her personal best with a 4:20.01 final time.
Just 30 minutes later, Cheney returned to the track for the 800m, finishing first with a 2:08.58 final time. Ultimately, Army came up short with the rest of their point totals, falling to the Midshipmen.
Up next, the Black Knights head it the TCNJ Invite & Multi in Ewing, New Jersey, beginning April 10 and lasting through April 12.
Hear From Coach Smith:
We came up six points short of the 102 that It takes to win this meet and while there was a path to 102 for us, we made too many mistakes that we could not overcome. It was a tough loss for our women. They have closed the gap significantly and we are much closer to winning this meet than we have been in several years. We won 7 of the 19 events. We were dominant in the field events where we won the hammer, shot, discus, and long jump. On the oval, we won the 1500m, 800m and 4x400m relay. Emily Fink '26 got us started with a strong performance in the women's hammer. She put the meet away on her first throw (65.89m 216' 1") and had some other big throws that ended up being fouls. She is setting herself up for a significant championship season in May and June. She also won the shot put with a winning toss of 15.75m (51' 8.25") equaling her school record set back in 2022. She was followed closely by Jordan Hecht '27 (15.68m 51.5.5") and Sara Sahadi '26 (14.81 48' 7.25") completing the 1-2-3 sweep. Sophia Dykstra '25 closed out her Star Meet career with a win in the discus (48.53 159' 2"). Sophia is one of our team captains and has been a leading force in our women's throw group. Today's win was bittersweet for her without the team win. Our women's long jumpers came up big today. Kalliauna Powers had the best series of her life and ended up achieving a long-time goal of jumping over 6 meters with her winning mark of 6.01m (19' 8.75"). That jump is a new Star Meet record and Army program record eclipsing the mark set by Pam Pearson in 1986. Olivia Reed '27 completed the long jump 1-2 finish for us with the best jump of her career (5.82m 19' 1.25"). Both of those women have come a long way this year and it was great to see them dominate the event today. On the oval, we closed out the meet with a win in the 4x400m relay. It was a big performance (3:45.65) for the foursome of Hannah Andrews '25, Ever Elegon '25, Faith Kibbe '28, and Skye Chambers '27. The outcome of the meet had been decided when the women lined up for the relay. Our focus was on doing the best we could. They ran hard and were rewarded with a dominating win in an event that could have gone either way. Our other oval wins were claimed by Mikayla Cheney '27 in the 1500m and the 800m. Her winning time in the 1500m (4:19.77) was a new meet record and the 2nd best performance of her life. She was followed closely by Charlotte Richman '26 (4:20.01) who ran the best performance of her life. It was eye-opening running for sure as both of those women took command of the race at the halfway point and never looked back closing the race with a 67-second last lap that split the field apart. Mikayla came back 30 minutes later to claim the win in the 800 meters in a very close race (2:08.58). It was a painful loss all the way around for our team today. It is a different meet, one that requires a lot of balanced depth to win. We are a very good team but today we were not good enough. We have a month to sharpen up for the conference meet which will be the biggest test for our team this spring.
