Softball Completes Series Sweep Over Lehigh in Comback Win

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Army West Point Softball (16-12, 3-0) overcame a five-run deficit in the final game of the three-game series against the Lehigh Mountain Hawks (12-16, 0-2), earning a 6-5 extra innings matchup.

With the win, the Black Knights sweep the season series against the Mountain Hawks for the first time since the 2019 season.

Ashton White, Annie Christiana and Maaika Dones led the way for Army with two hits. It was Dones in the top of the eighth inning who helped drive in the game-winning run.

Katelyn Flanders, who came in to pitch as relief, earned the win. She finished the game allowing zero runs, two hits and two walks in 20 at-bats.

How It Happened

Each team earned a hit in the first inning, with Ashton White having the hit for Army. Apart from the first hit, starting pitcher Breanna Izzo pitched for three putouts.

In the second inning, the Black Knights again only got one hit, this time from Samantha Sims singling down the middle.

Lehigh took control of the game in the bottom of the second inning. The Mountain Hawks scored five runs off of three hits and four errors from the Black Knights, taking a demanding 5-0 lead. Flanders then came in for relief, and the Black Knights forced a pop-out to get out of the inning.

The Black Knights earned their first run in the top of the third inning. It started with Sienna Tepley singling up the middle. Leila Hurst added another single, ultimately advancing Tepley to third. Annie Christiana grounded out but earned the RBI sending Tepley home.

Over the next two half innings, both teams went three and out, with the next hit not coming until the bottom of the fourth inning when Lehigh earned a double. But Flanders and the Black Knights' defense locked down the base pads, sending it to the fifth inning.

Maaika Dones got her first hit of the day with a single to third base, but was the only hit of the inning, with it being a 1-5 game ending in the sixth inning.

Army's rally game in the top of the sixth inning, scoring four runs off of four hits to tie the game at 5-5.

It started with an Annie Christiana single, and then Leila Hurst added the second single of the inning to advance Christiana to third. Caitlyn Newburn added a third single, sending Annie Christiana home to make it a 2-5 game.

Then two batters later, Maisi Sigler hit her second home run of the season, sending a deep shot to center field. That would bring the two runners on base, making it a three RBI home run, and tying that game at 5-5.

Annie Christiana would add another hit in the top of the seventh but was unable to convert it into a run.

As for Flanders and the Black Knights defense, they left Lehigh hitless and runless, sending the game to extra innings for the third time in five games for Army.

In the top of the eighth, the Black Knights were able to score the go-ahead run to take their first lead of the game at 6-5.

Murchison, the go-ahead run, was able to get on base with a double to left center. Then two batters later with two outs, Maaika Dones singled to left field, but then an error by Lehigh's left fielder errored, allowing Murchison to run home to take the lead.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Black Knights were able to close the door. Two Mountain Hawks were able to get on base, but Flanders and the defense prevented any run damage, clinching the series sweep.

The Black Knights return home for another midweek doubleheader on Wednesday against Rider University.

Army will begin their doubleheader at 3 p.m., with the second matchup set for a 5:30 p.m. first pitch, with both games streaming live on ESPN+.
