Baseball Splits Twin Bill at Lehigh
March 23, 2025 | Baseball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Army West Point Baseball split Sunday's doubleheader at the Lehigh Mountain Hawks, finishing the weekend with three total wins across four games.
The Black Knights move to 4-3 in Patriot League play and have won four of their past five games overall.
Game 1
The Black Knights scored early and often on their way to a 12-3 Game 1 win.
Starting pitcher Bryce Brownlee delivered a seven-inning complete-game, collecting four strikeouts across a career-high seven innings, retiring 12 batters in order from the third through the sixth innings and earning the win. He had allowed just one hit going into the final inning of the matchup.
Addison Ainsworth got Army on the scoreboard first with a first inning RBI groundout.
Lehigh took a 2-1 lead with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the first, but the Black Knights responded with another pair in the second—via a Mark Abell RBI single and a Thomas Schreck squeeze bunt—and never trailed again.
Army broke the game open in the fifth and sixth innings. After William Parker scored Barr on a single in the fifth, Jack Quinlan launched a three-run home run to left field to extend the lead to 7-2.
An inning later, Ainsworth plated a pair with single to left center, Parker scored Ainsworth on an RBI double, and Justin Lehman notched an RBI groundout before John McKillop came around to score on an E1 off the bat of Coleson Titus.
Lehigh added a run in the seventh but inched no closer than that.
Game 2
Army found themselves on the short end of a pitchers' dual in a 2-0 Game 2 loss.
Two Lehigh runs in the fifth inning were the difference.
The Black Knights' arms combined for 10 total strikeouts, with starting pitcher Joe Valchar recording three, Kevin Reavey picking up four and Robbie Penswick having three.
In spite of notching a career-high in the strikeout department, Reavey was tagged with the decision.
Twice, Black Knight relievers entered innings with multiple runners in scoring position, only to escape unscathed. In the fourth, Reavey came out of the bullpen and delivered six consecutive strikes to strand Mountain Hawks on second and third base.
Two innings later, Penswick came on for Reavey with runners on second and third and also recorded the final two outs of the frame in order.
Black Knight Notes
Schreck's squeeze bunt in the second inning of the daycap was Army's first executed squeeze play this year.
Army had more runs (12) than hits (10) in Game 1 Sunday, the third time that has occurred this season.
The Black Knights sent 10 batters to the plate in the sixth inning of the opening matchup Sunday, the sixth time in 2025 the team has sent nine or more batters to the plate in an inning.
Army committed no errors in either game, its sixth and seventh error-free contests.
Brownlee's complete game was the second by an Army pitcher this year as well as his career first.
The four hits allowed in Game 1 were tied for the fewest allowed in a game this year.
Valchar's Game 2 start was his first start across his career. He also tied his career-high with 3.1 innings pitched.
