Hockey Notches Shootout Victory Over Sacred Heart on Senior Night

WEST POINT, NY - Army West Point hockey (11-16-1, 11-9-1 Atlantic Hockey America) battled to a 2-2 tie with the first-place Sacred Heart Pioneers (17-9-5, 14-6-3 Atlantic Hockey America) before gaining the extra point with a shootout victory from Tate Rink.
Army collected a 2-1 win in the shootout as Dylan Wegner netted the winner after Joey Baez got the Black Knights on the board.
Army honored its class of 2025 before the game recognizing manager Cal Barker along with Joey Baez, Josh Bohlin, Andrew Garby, Andrew Gilbert, Hunter McCoy, Michael Sacco and Hunter McCoy.
The game saw a battle of the top two goaltenders in the conference this season as both freshman JJ Cataldo and Ajeet Gundarah started between the pipes. Cataldo made 22 stops in total while Gundarah logged 28 for the game.
The Pioneers got on the board first when its top line saw a two-on-none breakaway as Felix Trudeau fed Reid Pabich from close range to make it 1-0 Pioneers at the 5:16 mark.
Both goaltenders weathered the storm through the middle of the period, but Sacred Heart took a pair of penalties to set up the Black Knights with a brief five-on-three. Army capitalized just after the first penaly was released, with Barron Woodring slamming home from close range after a Jack Ivey shot deflected back off the end board.
Army outshot the Pioneers 12-6 overall in the opening frame and the sides went into the first intermission knotted at one.
In the second period, it was Sacred Heart that got its chance with a two-man advantage after the Black Knights took two penalties within a minute. The Pioneers executed well and got its go-ahead goal from Mikey Adamson off a feed from Marcus Joughin.
Army would not go away, with Vincent Salice equalizing in the closing minutes of the frame off a quick pass from Jack Ivey in front as the sophomore beat Gundarah from close range to put the team's into the second intermission tied at two.
The third period saw Army have its chances while outshooting the Pioneers 14-5 but neither side was able to break through and for the second straight home game, Army headed to overtime at Tate Rink.
Army controlled possession for the opening half of the extra frame but were unable to get a good look on Gundarah. The Pioneers had the best look of the overtime but Cataldo made a pair of saves to force Army's first shootout of the season.
The sides were tied 1-1 in the shootout through the opening three rounds as Joey Baez continued his success in shootouts throughout his career as he buried Army's first.
After Cataldo made a stop to begin the first sudden death round, it was plebe Dylan Wegner who stepped and made a move to beat Gundarah give the Black Knights the pivotal extra point.
It marked Army's first win in a shootout since 2-23-24 against AIC.
The Black Knights will return on Saturday to finish up the two-game series with the Pioneers, with puck drop set for 4:00 p.m. from Tate Rink.
