Hockey Returns to Tate Rink, Falls 6-3 to Air Force in Game One

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point hockey (3-6-3, 1-6-2 Atlantic Hockey America) fell to service academy rival Air Force (6-6-1, 3-4-0 Atlantic Hockey America) in game one of the two game series at Tate Rink on Friday night.
Sophomore netminder JJ Cataldo returned between the pipes for the Black Knights recording 33 saves against Air Force's 39 shots on goal.
On the opposite side of the ice, the Falcons put Dominik Wasik in the goal where he earned 21 saves against Army's 24 shots on goal.
Army came out of the gates firing as they recorded a shot within the first 12 seconds of play. Air Force responded with four shots of their own before one minute of play had passed.
The Black Knights and Falcons went back and forth throughout the first period with Army tallying 13 shots to Air Force's 15. With strong defensive work from both teams preventing the opposing offenses from finding the back of the net, the game remained scoreless through the first intermission.
Air Force opened the scoring with an even strength goal four and a half minutes into the second period.
The Black Knights answered back less than two minutes later when Jack Ivey scored a power play goal set up by Nils Forselius and Ben Ivey. Jack Ivey's goal marks his fourth goal in five games against the Falcons.
Army and Air Force traded shots for the next several minutes before an Army penalty gave Air Force a power play opportunity. With 13 and a half minutes gone in the second period, Air Force capitalized on the man-advantage for their second goal of the night.
With the clock winding down and just under 40 seconds left in the second period, Air Force scored their third goal of the game to double their lead before Army gathered a response.
The Black Knights answered back with 16 seconds left on the clock in the third period with a goal of their own from freshman forward Brock Jones.
After an attempted shot by Lucas Kanta, Jones swooped in to collect the rebound and buried the puck in the back of the net for his first collegiate goal to pull Army within one heading into the second intermission.
Air Force came into the third period with a renewed aggression on offense, recording three shots in the first minute of play.
The Falcons quickly scored goals four and five of the night within the first four minutes to take a 5-2 lead.
Army responded just under a minute later with its third goal of the night from captain Barron Woodring.
The junior forward redirected a shot from Sean Vlasich on the Falcons' doorstep to pull the Black Knights back to within two.
As the third period crossed the ten-minute mark, the Falcons extended their lead to three once more with their fifth even-strength goal of the night.
The two teams continued to trade blows as the Black Knights fought for an opening to close the gap, but Air Force's defense stood tall through the remaining minutes of regulation to maintain their 6-3 lead through the final buzzer.
Both Army and Air Force carried a .333 power play percentage on the night after converting on one of their three power play opportunities.
The Falcons led the offensive possession game with 39 shots on goal to Army's 24 but the Black Knights led in the faceoff circle as they won 40 of the night's 69 faceoffs.
