Wrestling Captures Four Individual Titles at Princeton Open, 16 Make the Podium
November 02, 2025 | Wrestling
PRINCETON, N.J. – Sunday was a historic day for Army West Point wrestling, in multiple facets at the season-opening Princeton Open.
Â
The Troy Nickerson era begun in earnest for the Black Knights, after taking the reins as Class of 1972 Head Men's Wrestling Coach in June.Â
Â
And—upon initial research by Army West Point athletic communications—for the first time in the program's 104-year history, a female wrestler won an individual tournament title.
Â
(Army West Point does not sponsor women's wrestling as a separate varsity sports program, but women on the varsity roster may compete in women's events.)
Â
Overall, the Black Knights won four individual titles and sent 16 wrestlers to the podium. Team scores were not kept.Â
Â
"I think we wrestled well for the first tournament of the year. We continue to show the depth we have within this program," said Nickerson. "We have a lot of data now for what we need to work on and a quick turnaround to go and compete against one of the nation's top teams. We will embrace the challenge."
Â
Clare Booe outscored her four opponents Sunday by a combined 38-0 on her way to the 117 lb women's tournament championship, with a 10-0 win over Jocelyn Danbe in the final.Â
Â
The 157 lb title bout was an all-Army plebe showdown, with Joseph Antonio coming away with a 12-6 win by decision over Kellen Smith to capture a title in his career debut.
Â
Gunner Filipowicz had a 4-0 Sunday to successfully defend his Princeton Open title at 165 lbs. In the final, he knocked off Princeton's Ty Whalen behind a second period takedown in the championship bout.
Â
Brady Colbert ended the day for Army by winning the 285 lb title, defeating Charles Hastriter of Oregon State by decision in the final, 8-6. Colbert had previously knocked off Army's Austin Kohlhofer in the semifinals, 4-1.Â
Â
Ethan Berginc suffered a loss in the 133 lb title to Lehigh's Matty Lopes to come in second place after going into the final period tied. Braden Basile also took a runner-up spot after falling to Rider's Eli Griffin in the final.Â
Â
Wolfgang Frable (197 lbs) and Kohlhofer (285 lbs) each came in third place. Charlie Farmer (125 lbs), Mason Barvitskie (149 lbs), Dakota Morris (165 lbs), Andrew Christie (174 lbs) and BJ Russell (285 lbs) each placed fourth, with Kohlhofer defeating Russell in the heavyweight third place match.Â
Â
Rounding out the podium for Army were Jake Crapps (133 lbs) and Jackson Van Kley (197 lbs) in sixth.
