ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Army's West Point rifle team joined host Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard at the annual President's Trophy Match held at Bancroft Hall Rifle Range Saturday.
In the five-man service academy scoring format, No. 7 Navy led with a 5891, Air Force was runner-up (5840) followed by Army (5827) and Coast Guard (3830). The Mids snapped the Falcons' title run of 11 straight.
In the NCAA four-man format, the Black Knights turned in a 4670 score, but it wasn't enough as they finished third among Navy and Air Force. The Army sharpshooters outscored Air Force in smallbore, 2323-2309, but the Falcons outpointed the Black Knights in air rifle with a 2370 to claim runner-up honors with a 4679. Navy was first in every category with a 4725 team score along with a 2341 smallbore and 2384 in air rifle.
Senior Chris Jennings was Army's top shooter in smallbore with a 584 to finish fourth individually in that discipline. He followed with a 591air rifle score, second highest on Army's squad, to finish in the top four in the aggregate scoring with an 1175. Navy swept the top three scores in aggregate, while Jennings edged Air Force's top scorer by four points for the next spot.
Sophomore Addison Antwiler led Army in air rifle with a 594 to finish fifth after losing out on a three-way tiebreaker for third place on center shots. She finished sixth overall in the aggregate scoring with an 1171 (577 smallbore).
Rounding out the rest of Army's smallbore contingent, along with Antwiler and Jennings, was Brenna Green posting Army's second-highest mark with a 582 for sixth place. Freshman Hannah Dufresne's 580 for the eighth spot placed three Army shooters among the leaders.
Sophomore Nicholas Bull fired a 575 to claim 13th with Army's Neilan Fahey, Barbara Forgues and Bohan Yang grabbing 22nd through 24th places, respectively.
In addition to Antwiler's 594 mark in air rifle, Jennings took tenth place with a 591. Navy's Tyler Wee and Parker Haydin posted the top two marks of 599 and 598, respectively, in that discipline.
Fahey (582), Bull (581), Green (581) and Forgues claimed 18th through 21 spots in rounding out Army's air rifle contingent.
"Today was not our best showing," commented head coach Leighton Dempster. "But we did okay in smallbore, not great, but still had a good showing across the board."
