Hockey Secures Sixth Straight Victory as Cataldo Shuts Down Robert Morris
January 25, 2025 | Hockey
MOON TOWNSHIP, PA - Army West Point hockey (11-15-0, 11-8-0 Atlantic Hockey America) extended its winning streak to six games while collecting its third straight AHA series sweep with a 2-0 win over Robert Morris (11-15-3, 6-9-2 Atlantic Hockey America) on Saturday night.
Army's six-game winning streak is its most since a nine-game streak during the 2020-21 campaign.
The team's remained scoreless through the opening 50 minutes of the game before Pierce Patterson netted the game-winning goal for the Black Knights.
JJ Cataldo was stellar in net for Army, making 29 saves to earn his second career shutout and tenth win of the season.
Mac Gadowsky added an empty net goal in the final seconds to bring his team-leading total to 11.
The first period saw neither team able to break through as both side's stayed out of the penalty box and scoresheet. Shots on goal were even at 11 apiece in the opening frame.
Army got a pair of power-play opportunities to begin the second, but were unable to cash in as Robert Morris eventually had an empty man-advantage as well with both team's penalty kills standing strong.
The score remained scoreless into the second intermission after a late flurry from the Black Knights in the final minutes of the period.
Army came close in the opening minutes of the third period, with Adam Marshall striking a shot off the post which almost opened the scoring.
As the clock ticked down, the game seemed destined for overtime before a missile of a shot from Patterson from nearly the blue line found the top right corner of the net to beat Croix Kochendorfer in net for the lone time in the game.
Robert Morris would pull its goaltender in the final minutes, seeing a shot of their own hit off the post, but Gadowsky ensured the three points would come back to West Point with an empty net tally to bring the final score to 2-0.
Army will head north of the border next for an exhibition matchup with the Royal Military College of Canada next Saturday with puck drop set for 2:00 p.m.
