Wrestling’s Colbert Wins Heavyweight Title at F&M Open
January 10, 2025 | Wrestling
LANCASTER, Pa. – Army West Point Wrestling's Brady Colbert took the 285 lb championship at Friday's David Lehman/Franklin & Marshall Tournament.
The plebe from Manassas, Va. went 5-0 across his title quest, securing falls in the opening two rounds over Logan Marissal of Harvard and Cleveland State's Shane Cook. He then dispatched top-seeded David Szuba by decision in the quarterfinals and won by technical fall over Brown's Alex Semenenko—the No. 4 seed.
Colbert won the heavyweight championship by forfeit over Cleveland State's Daniel Bucknavich.
Friday marked Colbert's second podium appearance in a week, after finishing third at the Southern Scuffle January 5.
"The biggest shift in my wrestling that led to this weekend's success wasn't technical—it was mental," said Colbert. Embracing excitement for my matches and focusing on scoring points rather than just winning made all the difference. I've put a lot of time into the mental side of wrestling with Coach Green's help, and it's awesome to finally see it paying off."
No team scores were assigned at Friday's single-day event at Franklin & Marshall.
Six additional Black Knights appeared on the podium. Ethan Berginc placed second at 133 lbs, with a 5-1 record Friday and two bonus point wins. The junior also defeated Tucker Owens of Air Force in the Round of 16.
Cooper Haase finished fourth at 174 lbs, picking up two of Army's four wins over service academy rivals. After pinning Navy's Liam Kilrain in his opening bout, Haase finished his day with a win over Air Force's Jack Ganos in the 174 lb third place match.
Charles Farmer (125 lbs), Trae McDaniel (157 lbs) and Jakob Gilfoil (184 lbs) each collected fourth place finishes.
Nain Vazquez meanwhile finished fifth at 125 lbs. He also picked up a win over an Air Force opponent, defeating Bubba Wright by decision of the consolation round of four.
