Women’s Rugby Wards Off Oxford 38-15
September 25, 2024 | Women's Rugby
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army Women's Rugby hosted the Oxford Women's Rugby team at Anderson Rugby Complex Wednesday afternoon for a rainy fall match. The Black Knights broke into the lead early in the contest and held the momentum all the way through the final whistle to claim a 38-15 win over the visitors from across the pond.
Alissa Eisenhart kicked things off for the Black Knights, rushing into the try zone only eight minutes into the action and completing the conversion herself to put Army ahead 7-0 in the contest.
Army stymied Oxford's offense at the try line for several attempts before the visitors finally found paydirt just over the 26-minute mark. With the Black Knights' defense putting up stops left and right on the try, Oxford's kicker was unable to complete the conversion and Army remained in the lead at 7-5.
The Black Knights dominated possession throughout the remainder of the first half with Elene Andrade notching a try only two minutes after Oxford's first, followed by Cassidy Ball 32 minutes into the action and Gabby Woenker at the 40-minute mark to round out the first half.
Eisenhart completed the conversions on both Ball and Woenker's tries, and Army entered the break with a 26-5 lead.
Army found the try zone once more, fresh out of the break as the squad marched down the field and Christina Belcher broke through Oxford's line just eight minutes after the return to action to put Army up 33-5.
The visitors pushed back, edging into try territory along the sidelines to claim their second try of the night at the 60-minute mark.
Katelyn Woenker capitalized on Army's momentum in the game with a try for the Black Knights just three minutes later, bringing Army up 38-10.
Oxford's squad sought to cut the difference down as time ran low, putting up their third try of the day 70 minutes into the game, but Army's defense held true, and the Black Knights secured their 38-15 win shortly after.
Coach's Corner
"Today was a good game for us. This was a great opportunity to get our team in front of an opponent they don't usually see and to put some new faces into our lineup," said Head Coach Bill LeClerc. "It was a great opportunity for our girls to get to play with a team like Oxford as we get ready to face Sacred Heart next Friday."
