Bill LeClerc, with international experience as both a player and coach, is in his tenth season as Army's women's rugby head coach.
Army had another strong campaign in 2022-23 under LeClerc, achieving a 6-1 mark in NIRA play including a last-second victory over Harvard. In the 2021-22 NIRA season, Army used a thrilling 25-17 victory over Harvard in Cambridge in the NIRA semifinals to reach the National Championship game against Dartmouth,
In the 2020-21 season, LeClerc led his Cadets to a 12-0 mark for the first undefeated season in program history. The Black Knights dominated from start to finish, outscoring opponents 465-25 en route to the perfect season. LeClerc's squad also posted impressive feats of victory over the service academies, going 5-0 vs. Navy and 3-0 vs. Air Force.
The Black Knights only got to compete in the 15s portion of the 2019-20 school year due to the pandemic. LeClerc led the Black Knights to an impressive 7-2 record and 4-0 in NIRA, as well as an appearance in the NIRA 15s Championship. In the 2019 season, the Black Knights had four athletes receive NIRA 15s All American status, three athletes make the top 20 nominees for the MA Sorensen Award and had three members make the HSBC All-Academic team. Under his tutelage, LeClerc coached record breaking cadet-athlete Sam Sullivan to 3x NIRA 15s All-American status, the first ever recipient of the Prusmack Award and the only rugby player in men's or women's history to be selected for the historic Army Athletic Association Award.
In their 2018-19 campaign, the Black Knights notched a 19-10 record and 2-2 in NIRA, before getting the opportunity to compete in the NIRA 15s Championship. The Black Knights defeated Norwich 61-3 in the opening round to advance to the final four where they saw a tough loss to Dartmouth. In 7s play, the team went undefeated at the Brown 7s and an impressive 5-1 in the Collegiate Rugby Championships. Army recorded big wins over #5 Navy, 31-0 and #1 Penn State, 24-12.
During the fall 2017 season, LeClerc led Army to victories over service-academy rivals Navy, and Air Force for the fourth consecutive year and a 29-11-1 overall record. LeClerc also led Army to a thrilling second-half victory over Norwich, 32-29 in Northfield, Vermont. The Black Knights advanced to the NIRA 15s Championships as a four seed. In the Spring season, Army went undefeated in three straight tournaments including the Crimson 7s, AIC 7s, Bowdoin 7s and the West Point All Academy 7s.
The Black Knights were one of the best programs in the nation under LeClerc during the 2015-16 season. During the 15s season in the fall, Army posted a record of 9-5 and finished as the runner-up in the NCWVRA championships. The spring season saw the Black Knights go 16-6-1 en route to the NIRA championship in 7s play.
In the fall of 2014, LeClerc led the Black Knights to a mark of 6-6 in their first year as a member of the Army Athletic Association. He helped Army post a perfect 3-0 record against its service academy rivals, earning two wins over Navy and one over Air Force.
Army advanced to the ACRA Sweet Sixteen, claiming a first round win over Connecticut. They dropped a 46-17 decision to Quinnipiac but defeated Navy in the consolation round.
He began coaching at Army in 2011, serving as an assistant coach to both the men's and women's programs.
LeClerc also serves as assistant coach to the United States Women's National Team, a position he has held since 2013.LeClerc is the scrum coach and provides tactical and strategic analysis for training and game management. The 2014 squad was among the 12 teams that qualified for the Women's Rugby World Cup, held in Paris.
LeClerc guided USA Rugby as national scrum coach from 2006-11. He implemented the National Standards for the Scrummaging at all levels, managed regional clinics throughout the country and produced an instructional video for coaches and players.
He helped USA Rugby qualify for the Men's Rugby World Cup in 2007 and 2011, the Women's Rugby World Cup in 2010 and was part of the staff for the 2009 Under 20s team that reached the finals of the IRB World Trophy.
LeClerc began his coaching career with the San Francisco Golden Gate Men's Club from 2002-05 before moving to Stanford as an assistant coach in 2006.
A 19-year playing veteran, LeClerc started competing at Durban High School in South Africa, followed by 89 caps with Northland Provincial. He suited up for Merloma for a season in Canada, followed by a stint as both player and coach for Athletic Club Boulogne Billancourt in Paris.
LeClerc collected 12 caps with the USA Men's National Team from 1996-99 and concluded his playing career with the Gentlemen of Aspen.
